Brown v. the Board of Education Summary Brown v. the Board of Education consisted of five separate cases about segregation. Each case was in a different state but the organization NAACP helped those filing each case. The cases were in Kansas, Virginia, Delaware, South Carolina, and Washington D.C. Each case consisted of numerous families.
Purpose and Focus: The purpose and main point of chapter one of Hope and Healing in Urban Education are that youth in low-income environments need extra hope and attention in order to succeed. Shawn Ginwright explains that while it may be difficult to reach these communities, it’s a worthwhile investment of time and resources to improve them. Ginwright uses personal examples of people who have been affected by the struggle of living in a crime-ridden and low-income neighborhood in San Francisco. This morning, I noticed that I was out of milk. So I decided to go and get some, to avoid a repeated day of desolation. I found myself at an out of town gas station, although being in my bed sounded much more peaceful. I went all the way out of town for milk because of the infuriating press. They are outside of my home, just waiting for me to come outside so they could humiliate me more than I already was.
All my 8th grade classmates and I sit on the cafeteria floor at Daniel Wright Middle School, giggling and staring at the gigantic screen. A slideshow plays. Often mortifying pictures of our younger selves appear with our names. I recollect all the vivid memories from middle school and earlier, like when my 5th grade teacher accidentally threw a snowball at one of my classmates. My friends and I sit together, hollering when we see each other on the screen.

Her home life was unhappy because of her neglectful parents and their financial difficulties. One morning, she woke up early, left the house and walked to her school. It was still dark, and she stood alone at the playground looking at her school.
In her narrative essay “The Sanctuary of School,” Lynda Barry recounts a story from her childhood that illustrates her relationships at school vs her relationships at home. She tells us how public school was her sanctuary from her unstable home life. It was a stable environment that she depended on. She tells us this when she says ,"[F]or the next six hours I was going to enjoy a thoroughly secure, warm and stable world." Unlike at home, her school was a place she was noticed and cared about.
Lynda Barry in her work The Sanctuary of School, wrote about her life as a kid with a toxic family life where she relied on school to be a place she feels secure. She tried to escape from her toxic family by going to school; was the only way for her to relieve her mind. The school granted her freedom to draw and provided her a safe place to stay. Painting and drawing was the only activity that made her happy. By doing these activities were the only way to express herself.
In many cases, students dislike going to school, especially if they have had a dreadful experience. Whether they have been bullied, having difficulties with their academics, or just plainly dissatisfied with what their school has to offer to them; nearly every student is struggling within the school system. However, a significant group of children located in the North Shore community are granted an amazing, one-on-one education at New England Academy. Fortunately, I was included and accepted into this selective group. The knowledge, skills, and opportunity that New England Academy has provided me, throughout my high school years, has impacted my way on how to approach the world for my transition into college and the vast, bright future ahead.
