I could smell the smoke and of something burning, but only for an instant because then the pain kicked in. I was in agony, the pain was unbearable, but I lifted my head and looked around. I saw my two friends with crimson blood all over their faces and deep gashes on their arms. The front window had been smashed. I could just see the bonnet of the car. It was as if someone had squished it. I then looked out the side of the car to see the police, paramedics and firefighters all moving around and speaking to each other. A young paramedic saw my movement and came running up to my shattered window and said to me that we had been in a crash. That they were working as quickly as possible to get us out of the crumpled car. He must have yelled out that I was awake because another two people came running over. It had been an ordinary day at school. I had been imprisoned in the same classroom for the entire day. It smelt like someone had sprayed an entire canister of deodorant in there to cover up the smell of perspiration. Instead of making the smell better, it only made it worse. After lunch we had a driver’s safety course. The policeman talked about speed limits and drink driving. They were obviously speeding. I stopped singing and told Rikki to slow down. Slowing down didn’t help though. The black car swerved all of a sudden.
