First Oil Shocks – Background The first oil shock began in 1973 when the members of the Organisation of Aran Petroleum Exporting Countries announced an oil restriction. This restriction was announced to support Israel during the Yom Kippur War. This oil Shock affected the Oil price of so many nations. The primary countries targeted at that time were Netherlands, Japan, Canada, United State, Portugal, South Africa, Rhodesia. At the end of this declaration the following year, the price of oil had risen from US$3 per barrel to nearly $12 nationwide.
Sitting in a huge class with white walls and many strangers while hearing the summer bridge director give the instructions of a reading assignment made me feel frightened. Ever since I was small, I had always had a difficult time with my English writing and reading. Having challenges with my English made me have no interest in reading, until the summer bridge assignment changed my perspective of seeing books. During my experience in CSUMB Summer Bridge I was able to read a book who inspired me and changed my life completely. Our reading assignment was a book titled “The Pact” by Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, Rameck Hunt, and Lisa Frazier.
Today is the day I’m going to escape and finally leave this hell hole. My foster parents will be gone for at least twenty more minutes so I have some time. I could hear my heart beat in my ears as I shuffled through my dresser drawers and shoved clothes in a duffle bag. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been through this. At my old foster home, every day was a battle.
I want my career to be based around working with children. Kids love being told stories, regardless if they are fiction or nonfiction. Working with children will require reading, and that includes stories. One option im considering is speech pathologist. A big part of the job would be reading, and telling stories.
Well...I was 6 when Child Protective Services came to get us. I lived with my mom and my three sisters, the youngest was Donna she was 5 & Lizzy was 7 and Mary was 10. I remember most of my family lived in the same neighborhood like my two Aunts and my uncle and grandpa and grandma. There was an occasional gunshot, sometimes there was a fire truck rushing down our street . We lived on top of a hill at 1015 Norwich in Grand Rapids.
As a twelve year old, I was often asked to babysit young children. Starting off caring for young family members quickly escalated to other babies and toddlers, which gave me an astounding sense of responsibility. My father is one of seven children, making my family rather large. I grew up surrounded by seventeen younger cousins, which immediately allowed me to experience how babies and young children act on a daily basis. Exposure to people who can not function fully on their own assisted me and built me into who I am today.
Foster Care The day I got taken away was a day I remember like no other. It feels like it just happened yesterday. The police came to my friend’s house, where I was staying for the weekend and came to pick me up. I went home to get some clothes
My sister, whom was simply a freshman in college became our sole provider and I remember knowing the only way we were surviving was through food stamps, Medicaid, my sisters full time job, and the help of those around us. At the age of eighteen she stepped up to the plate and made sure she made enough to pay bills. She constantly worked selflessly because of necessity. My sister served as an inspiration to me. I believe it was then that we realized that we were capable of a vast amount of things independently from my father when we had always believed it was not possible.
Although we had gotten away from most of our household problems my mother was committed to alcohol and cigarettes she also could at the time not afford her medicine that helped with her seizures. Also while living there I had fun moments like getting a good friend in fact multiple friends. After a while of living with my grandparents I got two injuries one on my hand and one on my mouth both of which I will not go into detail about. Also while I
Unlike most I am a daughter to many individuals, fifteen homes consisting of fifteen moms, and fifteen dads. I am a foster child, in a foster home by choice. I exaggerate “by choice”, because I’m not actually a foster child, I am not actually in the foster care system. My name sits in the category “homeless”. I have walked in and out of six homes, accepted not accepted, loved not loved, and sometimes bed, or no bed.
I sit and feel the breeze blow in my face. I have been sitting here for what felt like hours while my foster parents collect their return papers. I really shouldn’t have been surprised that they would be sending me back, they always do. I don’t really understand why they are sending me back. I didn’t do it.
For as long as I can remember I have loved reading. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, it doesn’t really matter to me. I remember my mom trying to teach me how to read when I was three. I started off reading small Dr. Suess books and then it was on to newspapers and chapter books. One of my all-time favorite books when I was a kid was Junie B. Jones.
Work with children Throughout my high school and college years, I have had several experiences with children that have all played a part in shaping my love for working with children. During high school, I spent two summers nannying for two young school aged children. Working with these siblings really made me realize how much fun I have working with children and watching them grow. Once I came to college, I started another babysitting job working with two four year old twin girls.
Dogs have long been known to make great companions. I have heard from many people who own a dog that a dog is capable of boosting your mood and your health. But is it true? I didn’t know if it was all true until my sister surprised us with two tiny dogs. After having our dogs for several months I noticed it does change our lives in many ways.
When we received one toy from the neighbor, we have learned to share this toy. They taught us that playing outside was really fun. My parents tried to give us a better life than they had. I have been discipline by both of my parents, but I never been abused, and mistreated by any of them or by any families member. No matter what, my family have always been there for me, teaches me some moral value, how to respect, forgive, and appreciated every day that I am living for.
