Do you remember in kindergarten when the teacher would ask the class what they wanted to be when they grew up? The answers usually consisted of firemen, doctors, princesses, cowboys, or an astronaut. Having had the foresight to properly test and adjust her loaded backpack before we left the motel, Julie appeared to be doing well in the backpack department, While still in the early planning stage, I envisioned a high country hike and campout on a scenic mountain summit or high grassy bald, meeting and exchanging stories with other hikers on the trail. As our gear arsenal expanded, I realized that, not being born a mule, I was neither prepared or willing to climb any long slope with a fully loaded backpack, no matter how rewarding the prize at the trails end. With a reputation of isolation and proximity to water, my daughter favoured the Lakeshore Trail alongside Fontana Lake, a place we 've only seen looking down from nearby mountain summits. The guide book illustrated the Lakeshore Trail to campsite 98 as a horizontal traverse for the most part, with a series of smallish undulating valleys and crests, the largest having an elevation change of only 500 feet.
Every year, my family goes on a snowmobile trip with my friend Aftyn’s family in Spearfish, South Dakota. About two years ago, we drove out for our trip as usual. The first day was super fun. We stopped at Four Corners, a fun hill to climb, and we did lots of racing. The second day was a little more eventful.
I will never forget that encounter the intense sun, the endless horizon, the infinite shades of blue that dissolved any boundary between sky and trees. The views were like swimming into a kaleidoscope, deceptively plain "Lake Winaukee" sign on the outside, but a show of colors on the inside, waiting to shock and, mesmerize me. Those colors! Sails on the horizon covered the lake; streaks of sunlight illuminated them, the swaying wildlife creating a dance of rhythm. Beautiful, preserved life synchronizing every movement with the camp sight creating one living entity.
As well as how I cannot take things for granted because others are less fortunate and they do not even have the opportunities and amenities I am able to have. This gave me a new understanding of how others have to survive from day to day. From my first mission trip experience, I have gained a new understanding of how far your actions can go and how important it is to show care and compassion to others whether you know them or they are complete strangers. Danny Thomas once said, "Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others.
“Big Lakes, get over here!’’ Locks exclaimed. “I’m coming, I just have to grab some logs for the fire.” Big Lakes said, while kneeling down next to the woven oval houses. “Okay, just hurry up.
After years of waiting and preparing we started on the journey to the west. We made our way to Independence, Missouri to go on the Oregon Trail which was laid by traders and trapers. While there I became familiar with George Wilson who was also a working family man. A lot of families left together making the trail busy and causing jams..
I finally realized that I didn’t have to live with the heavy consequences that I had been receiving if I just made the right decisions in life. As basic as that sounds, it was exactly what I needed to prepare myself for the real world and to learn how to make healthy
William Corbett College Admissions Essay In my life I have had numerous opportunities that have made me who I am today. My most revolutionary and life changing event is Guggenheim, a catholic summer camp that I attended for the last six summers. At Guggenheim I have undergone positive changes in many different aspects of my life. The energy at Guggenheim of 100 people coming together to celebrate their faith through singing, dancing, and praying provokes these positive physical and mental changes.
The drive was almost unbearable, but the thought of spending the week in the snow with family kept me going. It was only a four hour drive, but at 9 years old, it felt like an eternity. The scenery slowly changed from flat land, to rolling hills. The hills were covered in yellow dying grass, but they were still beautiful. Then we started to make the climb.
Hello! Yes I am doing well and had been travelling a lot recently. I am going to Big Bear Lake in CA this weekend with a couple friends. Time to ski! haha
As we pull up to the parking area at the start of the trails, I knew that our excitement during the long drive was worth it. I had planned this trip for months. Toiled over the minor details; the food, shelter, entertainment, parking pass, you name it. This was something I had wanted to do since I was just a little kid and now that I was here, it felt surreal. The sound of nature all around us, no signs of man besides our canoe and gear for as far as I could see.
