1720 Words7 Pages

My First Hunt I had always wanted to go hunting with my dad when I was young. Every year he would leave home and come back two or three days later with a deer or two. I asked him if he would take me with him, but he would always tell me that I had to be a little bit older. Finally when I was 8 my dad asked me if I wanted to go first season shotgun hunting with him, and of course after waiting for many years, I quickly answered with a loud yes.
That Friday I got out of school early around noon to go to the camp and get things ready. My dad picked me up and we left for a small town called Highlandville which is just north of Decorah. We had a few things with us. Behind us we were pulling our camper to sleep in. Some things we brought brought …show more content…

We spread apart about 30 yards from each other and began to walk through the grass. It was tough walking and it was hard to keep up with my dad and Miles. We had only been walking for about five or so minutes when around fifteen pheasants popped up out of nowhere. They were right in front of my dad so I wasn’t able to get a shot off. My dad shot three times and got two roosters.
It was hard to find them in the tall weeds. If we had a hunting dog it would have been much easier. We looked for the pheasants for about 25 minutes, and we still couldn’t find them. After looking for another few minutes we gave up. As we were walking back to the campsite I almost fell on my face. I had tripped over one of the dead roosters laying underneath a pile of dead weeds. So I grabbed it by its neck and carried it back to camp.
Later that night after we had got done eating the pheasant my dad and I went on Miles’ fourwheeler again and drove around on the trails looking for any deer or some signs of wildlife. We came across a few buck scrapings along a creek. I thought that it was pretty neat. As we continued driving around we came to a steep canyon. We stopped at the top and didn’t go down the hill because it looked pretty muddy and wet at the bottom. I continued to look down the hill and then I saw three deer cross the path. Although none of them were bucks I …show more content…

The only person still there was Dave. We got in the camper and played a game of cards and turned on the radio. After a while I got tired and went to my bed. I was so excited to go hunting in the morning that I could hardly go to sleep. Once my dad turned out the lights and went to bed I fell asleep rather quickly.
The next morning Dave woke me up it was around 4:30 in the morning. I didn’t want to get up because I was still sleepy. I rolled out of bed and began putting on all of my camouflage and orange gear on. I went out the door after I got my gear on and I realized it had gotten chillier than the day before. As I surveyed the surroundings I notice that we had gotten about a half inch of snow on the ground. It was still dark out so I went back in the camper and talked with Dave and my dad as they both continued to get dressed. Around 5:30 a.m. everyone else began to show up. So we got out of the camper and talked to them. Some of them were going to walk to their stands and blinds while others needed a ride since it was over a half mile away up and down hills. We decided that we would ride up to our blind with Dave and he would drop us off and then continue on his way to his tree
