At Miller Children Hospital in Long Beach I have developed certain skills that are necessary in order to go into the Human Services Career. At Miller I have learned how to communicate with different people, learn how to take things not seriously, and how to not let my emotions get in the way of assisting children and family. When I go back and think about my first semester of internship I remember how difficult it was to open up to different people and build rapport with them. I remember being quite, nervous, and questioning my abilities in the Human Service career. To me professionalism includes punctuality, looking the part, not being biased on one’s own beliefs and values, working in a team setting and putting the patients first, adhering to your workplaces’ policy and procedures, and knowing your job at hand and what is expected from you as a nurse. In the article, Perceptions of Professionalism Among Nursing Faculty and Nursing Students,” four different viewpoints of professionalism emerged and can be looked at from the view of humanists, the portrayers, facilitators and regulators (Akhtar, 2013)” According to the humanists professionalism is, “respect for human dignity, personal integrity, the right for patient’s to not have HIPPA violated, and the protection of patients from being harmed (Akhtar, 2013).” From the portrayers’ point of view, professionalism is evident from the overall appearance and attitude of an individual. Looking from the facilitators’ point of view of professionalism, one can believe that this should include; “standards and policies along with personal beliefs and values (Akhtar, 2013).”
I began college in 2014 at the age of 58 years-old to change my area of employment and do something that is far more interesting to me, working within the social services field. I realize the fact I was brought up by two dysfunctional, abusive parents in a chaotic home lead me to search out that same type of familiar relationship when I left home at the age of seventeen. As an avid fan of the manipulation of language, double meanings of words have always interested me. “Brilliance” with its multifaceted denotations is my favorite word because it accurately describes the essence of who I am. In one aspect, brilliance means “exceptional talent and intelligence”. I am hard working; I achieve high grades in school and use the wisdom I gain in daily experiences. The two traits that have consistently separated me from most people my age is my work ethic and my focus. My work ethic mainly shows up in sports, and business as those were more of a focus for me than school. Growing up I had a love for basketball, I was not the tallest, strongest, or most athletic kid on the court ever. But I had more heart, and desire than anyone on that court. American dream A time in my life when I attempted to fulfill my dreams or reach my goal was to be a teacher Procter. It all starts when I was in 4th grade age 8 or 9 years old when a teacher was talking about how to help student and teachers, she was wearing a lovely blue skirt with a elegant black jacket with details she was giving out some candy chocolate it was delicious when I was young. I was an adorable person in 4th grade. I set this goal because my feeling shows that I want to teach new things or learn from it. Being a Procter is a goal significant to me if I learn the original stuff from the past it will show that I can improve my knowledge and maybe work my grade up.
My life goal of being a nurse practitioner affected my choice of destination in history. If I could go back in time, I would go back to Hickory, North Carolina in June of 1944, which is only thirty minutes away from my home in Taylorsville, North Carolina. This small town became the center of the largest polio outbreak in the United States. “Polio” is short for “poliomyelitis”, a disease that targets the leg, arm, stomach and muscles of the back. If polio paralyzes the chest muscles of the victim, it can be fatal by not allowing the person to breathe.
Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. Circular personality comes with few shortcomings and my major pitfall is that due to my considerate and empathetic nature people are able to take advantage of my decision making skills by manipulating me and having decisions ruled out their way. There are ways which can help reduce this unscrupulous decision making by letting those people know that no matter what my decisions are, they will always be made based on fair judgment and not preferentialism. In the first week of lectures we covered about professional disposition. Professional disposition is vital to be prosperous in any career pathway.
Many of the participants expressed their desire to persist in continuing their education at some point in their future. Several of the participants expressed their feelings by setting examples for their children that no matter what their circumstance may be, they must persist in completing their education. Participant one, Anna, stated, “ It is very important to me to persist and go back to college because, without an education, I am stuck in a negative place. I feel like a hamster running around a wheel. That is why it is so important for me to get out of this circle.
