At Miller Children Hospital in Long Beach I have developed certain skills that are necessary in order to go into the Human Services Career. At Miller I have learned how to communicate with different people, learn how to take things not seriously, and how to not let my emotions get in the way of assisting children and family. When I go back and think about my first semester of internship I remember how difficult it was to open up to different people and build rapport with them. I remember being quite, nervous, and questioning my abilities in the Human Service career. Throughout my internship I have become more confident I am able to open up to people without being intimidated. I am also able to address certain issues that are not acceptable at Miller. Miller hospital has let me have interaction one on one with patients and their family. In the past I would always take clients comments personal and would get defensive. Being in the Human Services program I have learned that as a helper we will get those clients that will tell us things and we should not take it personal. I think this was the hardest part for me because I want to be perfect at what I do but unfortunately It will never happen because I am human and I am not perfect. I have learned that listening to what the clients are telling you and not taking it personal is important because otherwise you will probably not want to work with that client because you feel uncomfortable or upset of what they think or tell you. Letting things go and just analyzing the whole situation and venting to my supervisor is good so I can let it go and move on. I have really been practicing this skill because I would take things personally and get upset. Now it’s different I listen and don’t let it bother
