I am writing to apply for the Human Services Assistant position with Fairfax County DFS. At Miller Children Hospital in Long Beach I have developed certain skills that are necessary in order to go into the Human Services Career. At Miller I have learned how to communicate with different people, learn how to take things not seriously, and how to not let my emotions get in the way of assisting children and family. When I go back and think about my first semester of internship I remember how difficult it was to open up to different people and build rapport with them. I remember being quite, nervous, and questioning my abilities in the Human Service career. Throughout my internship I have become more confident I am able to open up to people without being intimidated.
Healthcare was an unplanned career for me. I am not one of those people who knew that I was going into healthcare from an early age. I spent twelve years in and out of the foster care system and worked as a warehouse laborer. Did I even have the opportunity to consider my passion at all? I was asked, “Where are you going from here?
For my Diverse Field Experience this semester, I spent fifteen hours at the Mclean County Juvenile Detention Center. This particular center was occupied by about 8-14 juveniles at a time, all depending on court dates and occupancy of other nearby detention centers. This center usually had 3 staff members working the shift every time I went, which was seven to nine on weekday afternoons. I was intrigued to go to at this time because I thought it would be the time of the day were the juveniles had no school work or other obligations to do while I was there. I wanted to see what they liked to do in the free time before bed, the only stipulation being mandatory snack time at eight pm.
According to the Ability Center, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) makes it unlawful to discriminate in employment against a qualified individual with a disability. The ADA also, outlaw’s discrimination against individuals with disabilities in State and local government services, public accommodations, transportation and telecommunications (Blanck 5). This document explains the part of the ADA that prohibits job discrimination. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission along with State and local civil rights enforcement agencies, work to enforce this part on the law (Blanck). The law unquestionably improved the lives of people with disabilities in many ways, especially by enhancing their access to businesses and public places.
My identity has always felt inextricably linked to what Miami is. A city that is teeming with immigrants, a city with dreams stacked and slopped atop each other, and a city that is living proof of the failed American dream. I say so because of my early observation that generation after generation of immigrants often seemed to stay trapped in dead end jobs; I saw this within my own family – within my grandmother, my aunts and uncles, and even my cousins. Here it was even within my own family tree the deep implicit message that there was no way out of our socioeconomic level. When I made it into an Ivy League college, it was a message that was slowly re-enforced by the fact that my demographic was the most represented in the custodial staff rather than within my own classmates.
In 2006 I moved to California with my parents, to pursue the American Dream that was dreamed by every foreigner It was seen as a great way to escape the danger and poverty we faced everyday in Peru. When we finally got here, the american dream was a myth, and working hard barely got you anywhere. Since day 1 both my parents have worked more than 40 hours a week to get food on the table, and the table back in Peru. They both support their parents and siblings financially, meaning there is no aid for me here. I wake up to do everything by myself, cook, clean, go to school, and especially homework.
Well...I was 6 when Child Protective Services came to get us. I lived with my mom and my three sisters, the youngest was Donna she was 5 & Lizzy was 7 and Mary was 10. I remember most of my family lived in the same neighborhood like my two Aunts and my uncle and grandpa and grandma. There was an occasional gunshot, sometimes there was a fire truck rushing down our street . We lived on top of a hill at 1015 Norwich in Grand Rapids.
In order to see the good in the world, one must first admit the injustices that have come before. My vision for America is an entirely new America, one where we need to admit the injustices that as a people we have done and we must recuperate those who have lost because of it. We must look at the past and heal the wounds we as a nation have left behind in order to create a new America, one in which the best and the brightest lead us, one where the world can point at our flag, the American flag, and say that we helped them meaningfully no matter their country and say that we are a beacon for hope, ideas, and freedom. These are all things that we can accomplish, but in order to do these things and properly defend the ones who need protection,
In January 20, 1961 the famous words, “My fellow Americans ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country,” were spoken by John F. Kennedy at his inaugural address. Fifty years later we see hunger, suffering, violence, tears, and a life full of sadness that many countries offer their people, but then we also see the many things some countries offer their people. America offers a lot to its people. We are offered a safe environment, access to the latest technology, free public education, some of the best foods, beautiful landscapes, some of the best colleges and universities in the world. There are many people in the world who wish to live in a country like America, for this reason America is considered the land
As election time draws near, I can not help thinking more and more of my vision for America. Election time makes us think about our visions and our values, for our government, our nation, and maybe even ourselves, but our visions must always be in our minds. Without constant thought and hard work, visions cannot be fruitful. I envision the nation our founding fathers would have wanted to emerge from their efforts, a hopeful nation, blessed by God and enlivened by faith. America should protects every life, from conception to the grave.

Overworked. That’s the closest word that I could use to describe this week. I feel like this journal is going to be about me just bickering, yet there is some stuff you might want to read about. First of all, I have been sleeping three hours this week because of upcoming midterms, quizzes, and assignments due. I am sleep deprived and mentally drained and as my second year in college I have never had my life drained out of my body like a passing shadow.
