Joshua: Our community Malcolm X festival was a yearly event at Frederick Douglass Park. Just blacks from our house every group, company, church, school, rich person, poor person and everybody who wanted to come, gathered together for a day to celebrate, being a community. After the bridge being blown up, I’d bet all the streets of Wirrawee would be swarming with all those dirty, foreign soldiers. So I insentiently decided to take all the back roads to the hospital. I maneuvered the Landie as best as I could around all the carnage. It was without question one of the most disturbing and distressing things I have ever seen; my home town was gradually being destroyed. Every street I drove down had an eerie silence to it, and most houses seemed to be blown up like
Many houses were severely damaged due to these releases. The city had no way of stopping it because this has never happened before so they flooded areas that had been flooded to try to protect other places. During this point there wasn 't much to do except to get your most valuable items and get out. Hurricane Harvey was one of the biggest catastrophic event the U.S has ever seen, the recorded rainfall and the release of the reservoirs were the two biggest factors beside the actual storm itself. The rainfall caused everywhere to over flood all over the city to the point where there wasn 't anything we could do.
Trees were down power lines were down, and some roof shingles were ripped off. The hurricane was like a three year old throwing a tantrum when eating their vegetables. Not to mention the town was without power for a week. So imagine being stuck in the house with no electricity. When the lights go out the darkness is like the void of space.
In August of 2005 we had a major hurricane named Katrina. It came and destroyed our city. It was the most devastating time ever. Our city hasn’t been the same since due to the flooding and wind damages that occurred. There are still a lot of homes that haven’t been repaired.
Because of that, U.S. citizens need to be prepared for these horrific events, especially Louisiana most recently. Louisiana has been one of the country’s latest “victims” of these phenomena, but the southern state’s recent experiences are just one of many every month, if not every week. Cities within several states experience destruction and devastation, and most do not know how to cope with all the loss that results after it. Knowing that, it would make sense that people would feel a little bit of relief knowing that at least there is a plan when these occurrences happen. A friend helped me to seek admission to come to Duquesne. Originally, I came into U S for sabbatical renewal and after the course my congregation permitted me to study if I’ll have admission. Leaving home to a different and more complex culture was very challenging. I miss my biological and religious family a lot.
What would you do if your entire life, friends, family, home, and city was rendered uninhabitable in a 24 hour period? Picture a city completely flooded, roads and highways engulfed with water, people, stranded on the roofs of their flooded homes, 100 year old 50 foot trees uprooted from the ground, abandoned pets, floating cars, buses on top of buildings, this was the horrific scene after Hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast of the United States on August 29th, 2005. This is not only the scene of hurricane Katrina but of most hurricanes that hit any populated Pacific or Atlantic coast. Hurricanes are known to be the most powerful and violent storms on earth.
Our team was like no other, we were the Smallest but and Mightiest team at City Year Miami. One of our most unique aspects of our team was that we had to share our totally super mega ultra awesome Team Leader Alexa Reichbaum with Redland Middle School Which became our sister school. Together we conquered many team builders and trainings including our Community Mapping event which was planned by Redland’s Glyn Turner and Shelby Chaney as well our very own Daniqua Denson! They made the event into a very enjoyable scavenger hunt. We divided ourselves (15 in total) into three team where we competed amongst the other teams to take pictures of ourselves in all the locations that were on the scavenger hunt before any other team.
