The battleground was fierce. The lone soldier faced seemingly insurmountable odds, with drops of sweat trickling down his face and the stain of the coarse earth covering his milky-white skin. As he breathed his last, I gave out my final command, "Knight to E-4." Checkmate.
While most kids spent their youth playing board games, I was always bored playing these games. My mind required something more intellectually challenging. I found my match in the game of chess. Unlike other board games, chess forced me to ponder over each and every move I made in order to beat a formidable opponent. Many of my peers thought I was weird for playing chess with old men at family parties. And they were right. I have been and always will be a little "weird".

I believe that it is called the College of Arts and Sciences because it is necessary to have a strong foundation in both the arts and sciences to thrive in the undergraduate environment. I am really looking forward to Mr. Kaplan's "Music and the Brain" class within the BBB major, as it will combine both my interests for neuroscience and music. I have no doubt that it will be the most enjoyable class I take during my freshman year. Yet again, Penn proves to be my perfect college because of its flexible course schedule that will allow me to minor in music in addition to the heavy course load of my major. Moreover, I want to take advantage of Philadelphia as the heart of cultural life in America and participate in the arts as much as possible in a Jazz Combo, thereby gaining experience in music both inside and outside of the classroom.
