Having an effective leader at the helm of a group of people is an important part of being successful. The best leaders are inspirational, patient, confident, open-minded, decisive, personable, positive, and a smattering of other great qualities. Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi’s profound quote regarding leaders still sticks out to me “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” A true leader is gritty and persistent enough to find what really motivates people to become the most successful they can be.

In this particular game, we started out in a relaxed man to man defense- not playing with any intensity and were losing by a substantial margin. Coach called a timeout, we huddled in and he got out his whiteboard and drew up a tight press defense. Also, he matched our most athletic player on their ball handler. The timeout concluded and we got right into our press defense which forced a quick turnover and layup. This continued through the rest of the game and we clawed our way back into the game and won. This demonstration of leadership is a great example of what leaders do- adjust their plan to make everyone a part of their team successful. Having an effective leader absolutely makes a difference in a team of people's success. As Daymond John owner of Shark Branding and FUBU says “The truth is, leaders need to keep an open mind while being flexible, and adjust if necessary. When in the startup phase of a company, planning is highly overrated and goals are not static. Your commitment should be to invest, develop and maintain great relationships.” The world could use as many leaders as possible who would inspire growth in people’s
