Being a leader means defining and exhibiting moral and ethical courage and setting an example for everyone within any given group. The book is not a testament of how great of a football guru he was at the University of Michigan, but how he was able to lead. His lessons was not complex, but based upon age-old life lessons while growing up. Things like working hard, being a great listener, and honesty are things are parents try to instill in us. As children, we tend not to listen to our parents because we believe that they don't know what they are talking about. With Schembechler and others like him, they are out here to help reinforce what others try to teach us. Bo Schembechler was proof that it's not necessary to win a national championship to be considered a great coach. He could be passionate about simple things. He was not complicated, and he certainly was not a sophisticate. Schembechler was the epitome of blazing intensity. He paced the sideline, waving his arms and sometimes smashing headsets when he was angered by the referees. He was as straightforward as they come. If you would attend a practice session with him, the heavy usage of profanity to chew out his players was at a premium. His in your face attitude would scare most people off and never play the sport of football again. Coach Bo was able to teach his players that his style of coaching will make them champions. In turn, made them champions for a decade. They have the trophies to prove that they were on top of the world, but the qualities he taught them made them better off the gridiron.
