It al started that one morning on what was supposed to one of our yearly family vacations. I remember waking up the very first morning in, Vienna, Maine, where our grandfather owns one of the largest log cabins along side Flying Lake. Being at this cabin each year defined my summer: the lazy days of just resting in the beating sun and hanging out with friends and family, the exhausting attempts of trying to get up on water skis, and viewing the fireworks over the moonlight sky every weekend. As I am outside on the deck grilling everyone’s all time favorite sausage and hash browns, I was blinded. Not from the view of endless blackberry fields and remembering all the memories I made picking the most delicious, fresh, sweet blackberries, or the …show more content…
In full panic, I thought running inside was the best option and run straight for the door. The glass door shatters as a wave blasts from behind and pushes me into what was a door back into the log cabin. Usually at this time, we are looking out to the lake and picturing all the fun we have ahead for that day, or even preparing firewood for the campfire we have each night under the endless stars that lie above in the moonlit sky, but in reality each person is completely glued to the news anchor. (wanted to add something descriptive about Maine, and bring it back to the current situation^^) “We will report back tomorrow, but as of now, here is a summary of what we know: Chesterville, Maine has been hit with the same North Korean 150 kiloton bomb that was tested in 2017. Please do not be afraid if you see bodies in Flying Lake, those people have been dead since the attack and will be clean up properly soon. These causalities mostly came from 500 rem radiation dose, the collapse of residential buildings, and third degree burns from thermal radiation. We will all get through this terrible time and come together to fight back against such a threat! Tune in tomorrow at 8am for more details.” My grandfather turns off the TV and exhales deeply. I walk over to him and give him a hug. As I give him a hug I feel his heart beating out of his chest, and I feel his pulse on mine. He whispers in my ear, “go get them” and falls to the ground, breathless. That was the day when I decided to fight for myself, fight for my family, and fight for my country.
