Along with VBS I also volunteered with an inner city recreation program that took place at a boathouse in Lawrence, MA on the Merrimack river, where I now work seasonally and row, for two years. With this program, inner city recreation programs would come one day a week for a couple hours so the kids could swim, take out kayaks, canoes and sailboats and swim in the river. My job during the hours these rec. groups were there was to push kids out into the water in canoes and kayaks and give swim tests. While these do seem like insignificant roles I actually learned a lot about communicating with people who speak a different language.Now working there seasonally I have the exact same job of giving swim tests and pushing kids out in canoes and kayaks. Throughout my whole life I have been participating in team activities, mostly thanks to my parents beliefs regarding inclusion. The team that I’m a part of is more of a family and support system than any other team I’ve been on. With the support of my teammates and the time in the boat I have to forget all my problems and just focus on one thing, I have gotten through a lot of tough situations. As far as careers, I want to do something in the medical field, hopefully physical therapy or dentistry. I have a passion for helping people and if it were my job to, I couldn’t be happier. I became interested in physical therapy a little more than a year ago when I started going to physical therapy myself.
