Research indicates that students whose parents did not attend college are more likely than their non-first-generation counterparts to be less academically prepared for college, to have less knowledge of how to apply for college and for financial assistance, and to have more difficulty in adapting themselves to college once they enroll. They are also more at risk for not completing a degree because they are more likely to delay enrollment after high school, to enroll in postsecondary education part-time, and to work full-time while enrolled. (Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Pasacrella & Terenzini, 1991; Tinto, 19931), First-generation students, may lack the cultural and social capital, which may account for the difficulties they face in academia (Perna, 2000). Targeted intervention efforts that reach out to first-generation students both before and during college can help alleviate the barriers and challenges first-generation students face and help colleges reach their goal of recruiting and retaining all students. What Fresh Graduates should learn from this 9-year old Boy A few days ago, I came across this article posted in my Twitter feeds. It was about the most successful young Entrepreneurs and it made me thinking, how simply ‘out of the box Thinking’ can change your life. Unfortunately the social standards, create hindrance for most of the fresh graduates to develop innovative thinking. They are compelled to think about getting hired in good firms as soon as they graduate.
I have attended Front Range Community College for the past 3 years. Before attending this school, I had no purpose and no direction in life. The prime reason for not attending college was out of fear of failure. I had previously registered with the school in 2010, but did not register for any courses. In the same year, I had been diagnosed with PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder), and had sought help with a local Veterans Affair clinic.
Getting through high school is a difficult thing to do and once you graduate you have a lot of important choices to make that are influenced by the environment that you are in and the people around you (your family). You have to decide if you’re going to go to college or not, if you’re going to live at home or move out, and many other things. Some people go from high school graduation straight into the work force and don’t even think about college due to the environment they grew up in and the expectations of their parents. My dad graduated high school and went straight into the work force because his family was extremely poor and to them college wasn’t even an option. My mom on the other hand had no choice but to attend college.

College is one of the most significant times in a person’s life. Every year high school kids will visit many different colleges so that they can be confident in their college decision. Some kids will follow in their parent’s foot steps and base their decision on where their mom or dad went, though, not all kids are fortunate to have help from their parents. Many kids nowadays may be the first in their family to take on higher education. The article, “First Generation College Students: Unprepared and Behind” by Liz Riggs explains that kids who are the first in their family to take on college are at a disadvantage compared to kids with parents who attended college.
When I graduated from high school college did not cross my mind. I wanted to join the Marine Corps and serve my country for as long as I could because both my grandfather and uncle we’re both in the Navy. But since complications happened I ended up in Massasoit. I chose Massasoit because it has one of the best transferring programs and has the major I wanted to get into which is Early Childhood Education. When I applied for Massasoit I did not know much about community college, I just thought that it’ll be similar to highschool which is not at all
The dream of going to college has been present since I remember. However, I lived in a low income household in Spain, and at that time my family was going through a great depression, lack of financial stability, and my parent’s relationship was not at its best; consequently, the idea of having another expense was not a priority for the family, needless to say that college was not an option. Nevertheless, life has given me the opportunity to review my priorities, make new choices and as a result, I decided to pursue a higher education. I became a displaced homemaker after my divorce in 2008 in Washington State, when I decided to move away and start a new life in Colorado. We were only us, my daughter and me.
When you're eighteen, it's hard for anyone to tell you what to do. After all you're an adult and you definitely think you've experienced it all. I’m a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School was not much different in my thinking - wanting to chase my dreams and have a college life beyond the boundaries of Kalamazoo. As an 18 year old, I was ready to leave my hometown, I thought I had seen everything Kalamazoo had to offer, and I was ready for new beginnings.
I can contribute my hard work to the Honors College community. I think that I am hardworking and I love to work with others to help solve problems because two heads are always better than one. I would contribute my ideas to the lessons and help others when they need it. I love to be able to work with other people outside my comfort zone and be able to hear their ideas and combine ideas to come up with something that will benefit everyone in the community.
The Middle Ages, written by Morris Bishop in 1968, gives us a perfect insight into this infamous period in history. Specifically, I read of battles and the lives of nobles. The title of "knight" was initially a title that was respected and earned. A special ceremony was performed, which was performed by the church as they gained more and more power over the kings. The primary weapons used by knights were swords, lances, and maces.
Growing up, for most people, going to college is not an option- its an expectation. In our society, going to college has become a fundamental part of our education, becoming an adult, and for most people just simply part of our lives. However, as people grow up and experience reality, the realization hits that college may not be as simple as once thought. As much as attending college is expected from the majority of young people, dropping out of college is not. Even with the idealization of the college experience, some students are forced to cut their education short due to a plethora of issues.
Maturity is the “full development” of an individual, but what does this mean? People have often thought that it just comes naturally over time. Maturity is the ability of a person to act responsible, making the most out of their current circumstances. Some people never reach the state of maturity, while other obtain it at a very young age. In this sense, maturity cannot be given to someone, but must be earned by themselves.
The problem How do we keep children interested? To keep children interested you just have to do something that interest them for example if they prefer visuals then they enjoy videos, movies, charts, demonstrations and any thing else that they can visually see. Then some people prefer it if they have its said to them for example they would rather someone else read a book to them than them read a book to themselves. Another way to keep children interested is for them to read and wright, they prefer for information to be written and then enjoy reading the news, books, magazines, etc.
