Personal Narrative: My Life In Middle School

The Phillip that you’d say hi to when you were in middle school is the opposite of the current Phillip seen around Tech Boston nowadays. My story at TBA all started in 6th grade, a fresh new start for someone who had a terrible time in elementary school hoping for a different story. When I stepped into class on the 1st day, I already felt disconnected between me and 99% of the class. I was from a completely different background than most of my peers so I couldn’t relate to them at all, my taciturn demeanor didn’t help the situation either.My only real friends would be my brother and my two friends Malik and Timothy. A program called Urban Scholars which I had attended ever since middle school started to emphasize public speaking in their curriculum which had a profound effect on me. These courses helped me find confidence in my voice and opinion which I never had the chance to develop growing up as the youngest in an Asian household where the oldest would have the most weight to their words. The increased confidence gave the opportunity to look at my past with a more objective lense, which revealed that I was only so close minded about being social to others because of my fear of social rejection rooting from elementary school. This revelation was where I’d like to mark the turning point of my personality in TBA. This of course didn’t happen suddenly one day, it was a gradual process which took its course throughout high school, noticeable in how my personality changed over time. Throughout freshmen year I just began to talk to more people, so even with my newly found confidence I had to ease into becoming more social. This was around the time where people started coming to me more for help since classes were getting harder, giving me more opportunities to talk and make more
