She is resilient, motivated and hardworking. Which to me, is more valuable in a human being than anything else. She is inspiring and motivating. She, is my mom. No, she does not have a multitude of certificates and degrees from ivy league colleges, nor does she make millions of dollars each year. She is my inspiration because, despite the odds against her, she has managed to be successful. She rose above the hardships that had the power to destroy her. Growing up in a household with a fearful mother and an abusive step father, along with eight other siblings was distressing. Life for her was chaotic and a bit rough. Many days she would go to school with bruises scattered on her arms and legs and even a busted lip. At the age of seventeen, my mother became pregnant with my oldest brother, Ron. The heartbreak and sadness that consumed my mother was devastating. The light in her eyes was fleeting and everyone around her felt it. For me to watch her fall apart was devastating, it seemed to me she would never be the same; she would never be okay. I stayed strong for her when all I wanted to do was fall apart with her. Although her journey has been tough, I never thought I would see her make the strides she has today. With the support of everyone around her, she is staying strong. Her story has shown me that I need to follow my dreams, not chase them. I have grown to be a fearless leader, hard working scholar and loving daughter from the strides and sacrifices my mother has made for me.
