In Chapter 9 of the book “Major Problems in California History” the authors use the key term “Hollywood” which is known as the “film colony” where movie stars lived and played. The author uses the term “Hollywood” as life in a movie by stating, “The existence of “Hollywood” as a residential community proved that the kind of life depicted on the silver screen could be found in reality.” Also, the author uses the key term “Hollywood” as a glamorous version of the American Dream by stating, “Ordinary people became acquainted with the movie stars’ opulent lifestyle through stories and photographs in fan magazines. Another way the key term “Hollywood” could be considered is as a resort city also named “Hollywood” located in southeastern Florida.
Victor Davis Hanson wrote the fascinating article, “It’s Still a Mad, Mad California”, published by the National Review. Hanson writes that there is a major class divide in California that is perpetuated by the elite. He identified a hypocritical belief that the wealthy of California are advocating for equality and more liberties for the oppressed. Hanson writes, “High crime, the flight of small businesses, and water shortages cannot bound the fences of Nancy Pelosi’s Palladian villa or the security barriers and walls of Mark Zuckerberg and other Silicon Valley billionaires- who press for more regulation, and for more compassion for the oppressed, but always from a distance and always from the medieval assumption that their money and privilege
David Brooks makes many good points in his article, and I agree with what he says and can relate many of my personal stories to him. Many of us want to live with people like us, and many of us want to be with people that are like us. At the beginning Brooks mentions how diversity isn’t cared by many, and he’s right. Before moving to California I heard that this was a place where many people came from all over the world to live better lives, so I thought it would be a nice place to meet new people. At first my family wanted to move to Berkeley and we were looking at neighborhoods that were cheap to live in, we liked many neighborhoods, but a few friends of my dad who had lived there told us that those neighborhoods had many blacks and hispanics
Owen Saragoussi, Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Lubowitz, Humanities Project, 18 April 2023. President Harry S. Truman Harry S. Truman should be the fifth president of Mount Rushmore because his days in office are punctuated by decisive leadership during critical historical moments, continuous contributions for the betterment of society, as well as his unwavering commitment to equality and justice. Truman’s days in office are punctuated by his choice of decisive leadership during critical historical moments, specifically on international fronts. Post-War Europe suffered from the loss of many lives, dramatic shortages of food and consumer goods which even worsened after peace had been declared. This is where the Marshall Plan, or Economic Recovery Act
Why do people come to california? Though people come to california for many, many reasons, the main reason people are attracted to this diverse state is the tales of success that are told. Many migrants came here in a hurry, expecting a better, easier life than the one back home, but most were disappointed. An example of this is the Great Migration, a large movement of African Americans from the American South, when many families moved away from the Jim Crow laws that segregated and oppressed them, and also looking for higher wages and better jobs in large cities. An example of this is shown in the article “The Warmth of Other Suns” when Isabel Wilkerson claims that they were “Not unlike anyone who ever longed to cross the Atlantic or the
Opportunity is something a person can not leave! If it is great enough, any thing is worth the risk for it. In the 1840 's the gold rush was something, it was a opportunity. Over 300,000 people were after the gold is search for a better life with riches. If I was in this time, I would have went to California because of the chance.
Coming to Cal was great for me because it was the first time I had found a real LGBTQ community. Growing up I always moved schools so most of my friendships were fleeting and upon settling for high school the Gay Straight Alliance club was extremely small so coming to Cal provided a great sense of community and belonging. The summer before my first fall semester, I took a few classes to get a feel for the campus which ended up coinciding with Obergefell v. Hodges and SF gay pride which is where I made a lot of friends. Whether it is going for drinks in the Castro, dressing up for the Folsom street fair or going to social events at Oscar Wilde, Cal has provided an amazing sense of acceptance and a safe space. During the spring semester, I preformed
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
The major turning point in California history, similar to the gold rush, was World War II. California became a sanctuary for wartime industries and also became a culturally diverse state as well. “California became a haven for those seeking better, more prosperous lives—just as California had been nearly a century earlier, throughout the Gold Rush” (Shmoop,2016). World War II brought jobs, industries, and many diverse families to California, but also brought fear, terror, and loss of loved ones who fought in the war. This fear of the Axis Powers bombing California, led Californians to hide their industries (this led to California being called Camouflage California) even though the community had the highest production rate in the U.S.A other
My home state is Texas, and a problem Texas faces is an overall mindset of systemic racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Texas is a very conservative state, thus many of the policies passed by our legislation are written at the expense of women and minorities. Although I might sound highly critical of our state government, I do not believe that these negative mindsets are deliberate attempts to put others down, I feel that it is simply an ignorance to the issues women and minorities face, and a lack of empathy. Ignorance is easily countered by thorough education. The easiest way to solve this is for us constituents of these politicians, to bring the issues that affect us to the forefront.
In the United States, representation of democratic government has very close relationship with geography. The United States is currently operating the federal system of government, which means that power is divided between different levels of government such as local, state, and federal. For each level of government, population and geography is one of the biggest deciding factor. First of all, there are three elected position, and they represent different range of the country. President, who has 4 year term, represents the entire country, and 2 senators representing each state make up 100 senators who have six year term.
That is what I love about being a Californian. I can walk through my community and witness different cultures within our country. In terms of how I keep myself getting frustrated with ignorant or hurtful comments from my buddies that I served with, I do my best to first find the humor in it. Then I do my best to educate them on how I was raised or how I consider the culture of many Californians to value the empowerment of women and to treat them equally. I also express that my mother, older sister and my wife are very vocal, goal driven individuals that follow their professional and personal desires.
Growing up in California, my whole life has been around farming and like many others, it’s how I make a living. It’s now been at least a year, living through the Dust bowl and many people have migrated to California with the hope of surviving this crisis. Keeping my crops has become a struggle and that's what most people including me depend on. I am lucky enough to be able to pay my mortgages even though I’m not able to keep the land with the help of family. It’s practically impossible.
Alameda County California. I grew up in Oakland, California and went to Franklin Elementary School. When I was in the 5th grade I moved to Hayward California and went to Eldridge Elementary School. As a transfer student, I felt different from everyone else and my learning abilities were different. I learned quicker than others and was more intellectual than they were and because of these things I never really had friends.
California is the “beauty of the eye of the beholder” since all people who come from different background, race, and religion are able to set their own dreams without being criticized. People especially immigrants have viewed California as the “land of opportunity,” which influenced them to leave everything behind in their hometown, to sacrifice their time and to focus on their dreams. Despite the fact that California was lauded as a utopian society, people soon found out that they were going through endeavors and couldn’t overcome them quickly as possible. In fact, Mr. Rawls wanted to express the grievances, struggles, and success that people endure in their rise to the California dream in his short essay, “California: A Place, A People,
