One challenge I have persisted through is my father's substance abuse and how it effected me. Growing up, I watched as my alcoholic father turned abusive. Eventually, after years of witnessing domestic violence and fearing for my life, my father was incarcerated. Although I thought he was gone for good, he returned from prison after a few years. However, I was convinced that he was changed.
I’m laying on the ground my ears are ringing as I slowly get to my feet I notice a sharp pain in my left arm. This whole idea was put in my head about a month before. Recently, at 5:30 I am sitting under a pavilion listening to the rock and roll music blasting in the background while eating a bagel I 'm not saying much I am looking back at the my first year of riding and wonder how i got to wear i am today, awaiting the start of my first 100 mile mtb race, i recognize how breaking my arm was instrumental to my success as a mountain biker.
INTRODUCTION I was 43, when I finally decided to try with all my heart to face the demons inside of me. I had been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and my physical health was suffering from incredible fear, anxiety, and migraines. The migraines were so severe that I was visiting the doctor once a week and had been sent to the hospital several times for relief. My entire body ached, flashbacks wouldn’t cease and I was falling apart.
When disadvantages occur, it feels bad and upsetting. But at that moment it is best to keep an open mind to try to think positive and overcome the challenges that occur. It might be difficult to think positive when you have a disadvantage, but thinking positive is one of the best ways to overcome the obstacle. Sharing an example would be the time our soccer team made it into the finals. Only ten minutes were left into the game was over.
At the age of five my one-year-old sister had a stroke, it took many months for research aids to diagnose her. She has a rare disease called Fibro-Muscular Displeasure, which caused her arteries to be very small causing blockage to the brain. Because of this my mother had to be in the hospital for 9 months alongside her. During this time I felt as if I didn’t have a mother and I resented my sister for taking her away from me.
Outside Challenges My challenge is personal. Twenty five years ago when my father died. It was devasting to me because awaiting his recovery after surgery, the doctor told us everything went well with his triple heart by-pass and he was in recovery. As my family and I waited in the waiting recovery room a warm wave came over me.
In my brief life, I have overcome a lot of adversity. My mom fled Mexico with her three young children to escape domestic violence. When we came to this country we had only a few personal belongings and the promise of a better future. We came to this country and lived in a small trailer with no toilet other than a bucket, and no shower except for the one that was lent to us from the kindness of a stranger, our new neighbor. As a single parent, my mother had to work day and night to support us.
I met my challenges and I have overcame them these past three years. I had to learn to be stronger and push to my
Facing and, moreover, overcoming adversity is an immense obstacle to encounter. No matter how big or how small, problems in life will always be present. My life in particular has been full of up and downs related especially towards my health. Adversity has played a major role in my life when I got a concussion which altered my personality and well-being which could be seen in my athletic, academic, and social life.
I deteriorated in silence and grieved within the confines of my mind. As a child, I grew accustomed to hiding my pain. Whether if it was physical or emotional, there wasn’t an outlet available to show how the unhappiness my parents granted me distorted my personality. I had no help.
Over coming life challenges proves to be a difficult task with a little patience, perseverance, and a bit of hard work it can be done. I know this to be true, I have lived and overcome adversity. I was raised in a dysfunctional family, my father was a Vietnam veteran with undiagnosed PTSD whom was addicted to opioids and alcohol. , he was very physically and mentally abusive My mother attended nursing college while I was an infant, and was a text book enabler.
Everyone in life will have their own personal obstacles they will have to face in life. Some people will mentally shut down and give up when faced with a challenge. Others will take their challenges and use them to better themselves. The obstacles that I have faced in my life have never hit me harder than they have these past few months. This being my senior year I always expected it to be the most laid back and relaxing year of my life.
All I remember is being scared. I just stuck a needle inside my thigh. I remember thinking how it was in and out in just five seconds. As my mom pulls into some parking lot in El Paso, when the ambulance pulling into the parking lot at the same time. My mom, Grandma Kimbro--who was freaking out--, and me had just come from a doctor appointment for my grandma when my mom was talking to my family doctor who told her for me to stick myself.
Going through the journey of self discovery. I was only 15 and a freshman in high-school. There were days when I could not get out of bed, even to take care of myself. I had no motivation, no drive, no happiness to mpush me out of bed. I had been bedridden for 3 week when my other had dragged me to the doctoers.
