Immigration into the “land of opportunity” was everything but a smooth, trouble-free journey for those escaping the terror, poverty and political persecution in their crumbling countries. The wave of immigrants was at its peak during the breakouts of economic depressions (Document A). The new flow of immigration doubled the American population, especially in major cities. Chasing after the American Dream, many Europeans were attracted by the employment openings and new chances they could obtain in America. However, despite their life being better than before, these immigrants still faced many obstacles and cultural conflicts trying to fit in and thrive in American culture.
America claims to have free opportunity, but to immigrants, there tends to be none. Illegal immigrants aren’t treated well by people in the government and are forced into detention centers or jails. Jose Antonio Vargas is a Filipino writer and immigrant activist who suffered the same experience as any other illegal immigrant just to find a better opportunity in America. He states in the article “What America Looks Like From A Jail In South Texas”, “This is a country that prides itself as one founded and built by immigrants, but also one whose laws and policies have historically been anti-immigrant.” This statement itself brings out how much immigrants helped out America, and yet America still doesn’t accept the fact that immigrants were the ones who shaped our society.
Oppression or opportunity? Immigrants faced many things while inside America. Low paying jobs, Illnesses, and small living spaces. Immigrants came to America expecting greatness, the “ Golden Country’ as some would call it. When the Immigrants came here, what they hoped was nothing like it seemed.

Immigrants from all over the world travel days, weeks, and months to be greeted by Lady Liberty and create a better life for themselves. In particular, immigrants from Europe save every penny they have to afford the trip to America. They leave their family, friends, and the comfort of their home to explore the unknown and diversity of America.
America, a country where the people are from all corners of the Earth. Each bringing their own ideals, traditions and beliefs. Since America was young, many have immigrated to the country. Immigrants display an appreciation of the U.S. and a commitment to making it their home, but they also maintain a strong connection with their country of origin because even though the immigrant(s) move to a new place and start a new lie, they’ll always have something to remind them about their home and where they came from. This is good for the United Sates because if the country the immigrant came from has found great ways to make life better, the immigrant(s) could tell the people at their job about the great idea and maybe start something over here and give credit to where the idea came from. The values and sentiments of immigrants whether they are Latin American, East Asian, Caribbean, or European- mirror those of native-born Americans, according to new research carried out by the no-profit partisan research group, Public Agenda. The national origins of immigrants to America are changing in step with both world events and evolving U.S.
Introduction Immigrants bring stories of bravery, strength, and the dream of having a better life, reminding everyone of the dream of a better life. There’s a high chance you've met an immigrant before, in fact immigrants make up 13.6% of the U.S population or more than 45 million people. Immigrants play a large part in shaping America into what we know it as today. As immigrants come to America bringing their culture and stories, they also bring some debates.
What most Americans don’t see is that just as them these people come seeking for the American dream looking for a better life, better education, and better safety that is lacked in one 's’ native country. It is true that the first or old immigrants to this country were the founders the ones that started everything but this doesn 't mean that the rest that come are not willing to continue to make this country grow and continue to be prosperous as it has been and as it has progressed over time. Differently many of the new immigrants and some that even come as refugees come from extremely different parts of the world which are very different to the places to the originality of the old immigrants (Grambs). There are problems in the people that have to do with adjustment, where the “old” immigrants have trouble accepting. As Grambs explains that the insensitivity that the old immigrant experience and is often remembered through family gatherings and showed in literature in which the wounds are revealed and are seen still keep hurting.
Growing up as a daughter of immigrants has made me appreciate my culture and background. I was mostly raised by my mom. My parents divorce has made me a stronger person because I have seen my mom struggle everyday. My siblings and I didn’t have two people to rely on like most people. My single mom raised three kids alone.
As a teenager moving to a new country with a different culture, different language, and being thousands of miles away from everyone I grew up with was not an easy change, however, that was precisely what I did in January of 2013 when I came to the United States with my father. My whole world changed since, and shaped my way of thinking. From learning English, adjusting to a new culture, experiencing my first snow and finding my way in my new country, my life has been an exciting adventure. My parents brought me to America almost 5 years ago to have a better life, and to get a better education.
I am a daughter of a refugee and an immigrant. My father left Ethiopia and walked across several countries finally coming to America. While my mother came after 15 years since the communist advance into South Vietnam. I come from a household of parents from two different continents. Their arrival america gave an unique atmosphere in the household.
The immigrants do not have a simplistic journey reaching America, nevertheless facing the problems and difficulties is better than staying in their home country. Countless immigrants have strived for their place they should be allowed to live in a nation where they have contributed and worked hard on. The American dream and the immigrant experience is connected. The hard work of achieving the American dream is where the immigrant’s experience comes from.
