In his article, “Are Too Many People Going to College?” Charles Murray argues that too many people are going to college universities when they should be focusing on other lifestyle options. In his opinion, whether or not to attend college is a personal decision that should be thoroughly thought through. When weighed with the unrealistic prerequisites, the financial expenses, and the time needed to obtain a degree, many people will find that attending college will not be beneficial to them. Speaking of this Murray attests, “The question here is not whether the traditional four-year residential college is fun or valuable as a place to grow up, but when it makes sense as a place to learn how to make a living.
In his Essay “Are too many people going to college,” first published in a 2008 issue of AEI, Charles Murray explores many insights onto the topic of furthering education as well as exploring various other options to pursue after high school. Who exactly would think that too many people are going to college? Well with more and more students flooding campuses at the end of every school year and less and less going into trade schools, a shift in the job market is just beginning to be seen on the horizon. Charles Murray’s essay “Are too many people going to college” shows that not only are there other avenues to pursue a potential life long career, but that much of the time pursuing these avenues may offer better results for some wanting to go to college.
Throughout all of my years at school, I have been constantly reminded by my parents that I must do my very best in school so that my college will be paid for, because they wouldn’t have enough money to put me through. The ASPMA Scholarship would mean a lot to me as it would help me greatly and enhance my college experience by allowing me to have the highest possible grades, help me grow into an involved, more social person, and relieve some stress that inevitably comes to every college student. Since I would rather not assume student loans during college, I must work if my scholarships don’t cover all of my school expenses. The more I work, the less time I will have to study, and the more stressed out I will be. I believe the ASPMA Scholarship will help me to have the best grades possible because with more funds, I will have to work less, giving me more time to study and less scenarios to worry about.
Throughout high school, my opinion on college and how I planned to approach my future changed drastically. As I became more exposed to people other than my family, I learned the importance of an education. In order to procure all available options for my future, a post secondary education must be obtained. Although my parents bestowed upon me the family genetics and taught me the mindset of the uneducated working class American, through self desire and a lust for knowledge I altered the course set for me to a brighter more enlightened
I wish to pursue a college degree to aspire to my dream of prevailing as a forensic pathologist. I hope to go to an Indiana college to stay closer to home and care for my grandparents but still exploit the full college experience and secure a career for myself in the long run. I have always understood that to be stable person I had to achieve a college degree to back it up. College is a place where as a student I hope to grow and become inspired by others. I want to pursue a degree to boost my future Masters in Medical School.
One of my proudest accomplishments was graduating from UNC-Wilmington with a bachelors in Psychology. When I started high school I was there to get in and to get out. I graduated high school with honors and moved on to community college not truly knowing what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be. My parents pushed me to go to a university and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made. I always had an interest in psychology but it was just that, an interest.
I tried college but I didn’t like the idea of cleaning up everyone’s mess or to pay for a school I didn’t even like. I started working for this nice gentleman named Dan Cody. He was a millionaire and his passion was in his boat. I worked there and made a living.
Many students sometimes just leave out of high school and don’t even bother going to college due to the amount of time they think is going to be wasted. College does take a lot of time from a person’s day rather it be with being in class or doing homework , but the end result of it all is well worth it . Being able to spend all this time and money for college can be stressful, sometimes even difficult but being able to finish and get a diploma will prove theater hard work pays off. Although finding a job after college can sometimes be the most stressful thing to do it will all turn out for the better. Many times some people can’t find a job in the city or state they currently live in but other places may have the dream job they’ve been looking for since leaving college.
I wish to attend college to further enhance my education, to be a first generation college student, and to become a better version of myself. First, I wish to enhance and further my education. Knowledge is the key to success and those keys can unlock doors never before seen. A high school diploma is great but it is not enough for me or any huge company.
College has become more and more expensive over the years. Receiving a scholarship would greatly relieve the burden of having to deal with the massive student loans. As I continue my education my student loans will continue to accumulate. That is why any scholarship I am able to obtain I would be grateful for. Like all other current students I am troubled with the idea of not being able to obtain job after I graduate from college.
Finding motivation to attend college is easy, keeping the motivation to finish is the difficult part. I decided to enroll in college to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Business with a concentration in Finance. I hope that the degree will give me the opportunity to apply for a better position within the organization that I currently work for. A secondary goal of returning to school is to demonstrate to my son that attending college is required for many jobs and that returning to school as an adult has various difficult challenges. I have been working for the past nine years as an Assistant Financial Officer and am highly competent at my job.
When I first graduated high school I thought I wanted to be a pilot to fly airplanes, so I signed up to attend classes at Kishwaukee College located in DeKalb. ECC helped me sing up for classes at an in district rate because Elgin could not offer the courses that I wanted to me. During the first semester I found out that I did not want to become a pilot anymore and that I would be happier if I changed and focused on computer science. The advisors helped me schedule classes back at ECC for computer science then next semester. During the last year and a half at ECC I have been able to start fulfilling my education goals by getting a good education and find out what I want to go to college for.
Imagine that you have just graduated high school. You are more full of life, enthusiasm, and energy than you have ever been. Your four years of hard work have finally paid off, and now it is time for the next step. According to your parents, teachers, and just about every other authority figure in your life, college is that step. However, what if that did not have to be so?

However, in the last few years I have realized that my passion for human rights advocacy is my natural calling which I am destined to pursue. As I entered my first year of college at the University of Maryland – College Park, I took a specific interest in a group known as Consult Your Community. The organization allows undergraduate students to engage with low-income and minority-owned small businesses to provide pro bono consulting services.
