I am a pioneer! My pioneer story isn’t your average Latter Day Saint pioneer story, as far as historical LDS stories go! I was raised by goodly parents, I was born and raised in Spokane Washington. I am the youngest of three children born to Jim and Shannon Newell. My brother James is the oldest and four years older than myself.
“Drinking Coffee Elsewhere” by ZZ Packer follows the story of Dina, a young black girl from Baltimore, as she copes with life studying at Yale (117-119). Throughout the story, Dina seems to be a fiercely and independent character that likes to be on her own and away from society. She always speaks her mind, regardless of the consequences, but her independence destroys her because of her lack of introspection. This helps her to give up things that will help her get out of her individualism. Due to this, she pushes away the only friend she has because of her inability to understand herself, and her toxic personality.
In Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, the major theme that develops is a loss of innocence. This loss of innocence is a common theme in many of the stories including Brownies, Our Lady of Peace, Speaking in Tongues, and Geese. In the first story Brownies, there is a troop of black girl scouts and a troop of white girl scouts going camping. The black girl scouts have always looked at the white girls as different, and were calling them names. “They smell like Chihuahuas.”

I can feel my phone vibrating up against my leg, which makes me want to drive my leg down even harder onto the gas pedal. When I got a chance, I checked my phone to see who it was. Sure enough, it was my girlfriend, Kendall Ciantar. She had called me and texted many times. It seemed to me that she was getting worried about me.
Nowadays, the number of coffee drinkers are increasing. As the demand for coffee grows, the number of coffee chains is also increasing. and has forced a number of smaller coffee shops out of existence. As a result, Starbucks is sometimes labeled an “evil” corporation focused on maximizing profits at the expense of small “Main Street” businesses—an image particularly at odds with the laid-back coffeehouse culture it ironically helped create. The chain has also received criticism for environmental issues, tax avoidance, and its employee tip policy. However, Starbucks also promotes fairly-traded coffee products and has made strides with environmental groups for recycling supplies and cups.
My grandfather asked me “Which one?” I respond “Let’s get this one”. Little did I know that guinea pig was my dinner. Guinea pigs or cuy are not pets but food in Ecuador. When I arrived at the airport it looked like any typical airport, but it felt as if I was in a different world.
Father Daniel Mary left Minnesota and founded the Wyoming Carmelite in Clark, Wyoming. Father Daniel Mary had a vision of creating a new Mount Carmel with extending the accommodations from 13 monks to 30 monks living on a 500-acre ranch. After having over 500 inquires of young men asking to join the Carmelites, a larger monastery was needed. The monks wanted to buy the 500-acre ranch but did not have all the money for the listing price of $8.9 million. The Mystic Monk Coffee was developed because the Carmelite Monks needed a plan to earn extra money.
This observation was done at a local Starbucks. The main impact this had on my observation was that I am familiar with the culture of coffee shops, even if this one was new. I had a good understanding of who I would see and my perceptions of them based on this experience, as well as other cultural norms. For example, I mentioned the couples as likely being romantically involved if heterosexual, and same sex couples to be friends/ acquaintances/ work partners, due to my experience with heteronormativity, as well as the prominence of coffee shop dates and work meetings in my cultural understanding. I also assumed adult and child pairs to be parent and child due to my own experience (as well as the words “mom” or “dad” on occasion) as opposed to any actual knowledge of their relationship.

I also love crab legs. My dad has always said that if I ever got hungry enough, I could eat my weight in crab legs.
Winter was just around the corner. It was my first time in the biggest coffee shop in town. I could see the cheerful and brilliant lighting of the shop as I walked across the vast parking lot. There were tables outside the shop each with a brown vintage style umbrella. This particular coffee shop is not a cafe, it’s a coffee shop literally.
