The Dougherty County Jail is 1,230 bed state of art pre-trial detention facility that is under supervision and operation of Dougherty County Sheriff. In addition to pre-trial inmates, the facility houses State, City, and a small number of other inmates for other area law enforcement agencies. The jail facility is unique in that it has two on-site courtrooms that host a variety of court proceedings seven days each week. The jail maintains a high-level of safety and security utilizing current and nationally accepted detention management practices. The jail utilizes inmate labor under the supervision of contracted food services specialists to prepare approximately 3,500 meals daily.

Craig Haney’s article Mental Health Issues in Long-Term Solitary and “Supermax” Confinement illustrates the complications faced in solitary confinement emphasizing the rise in mental health challenges imposed. One of the most recent scandal that happened in Law Enforcement community is the Los Angeles jail scandal. Los Angeles County Sheriff are involved in the incident that took place in Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, CA. Based on the reports, the sheriffs were abusing the inmates and also in one occasion has been reported illegally detaining the visitors of the prison from Australia. The beatings were unjustified and causes a stir in the Law Enforcement community. This is just another case of police brutality that as been put into light and its giving our police officers a bad name.
In the early hours of March 2013, I remember waking up and praying for the nightmare to be over because I felt I had no way out of my current situation. My life had come to a point where I was no longer in control and heroin was controlling my every decision. A few short hours after that fictitious “fox hole” prayer, I found myself handcuffed in the back of an uncover officers vehicle on my way to Lackawanna County Prison. I had never felt so alone, but at the same time, I had never felt so relieved in my life. However, modern research suggests that locking a human being in a jail cell the size of a handicap bathroom stall for more than 22 hours a day does more harm than good. In spite of these scientific discoveries, prisons in the United States continue to use solitary confinement as a method of incarceration. Due to the negative impact prolonged solitude has on the human mind, solitary confinement should be outlawed as a form of torture.

Supermax prisons are generally designed to house the most misbehaved inmates, and these inmates are generally locked away in solitary confinement for a majority of their stay (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). Mears (2015) mentions that supermax prisons are designed for punishment and seclusion, but these inmates can be released from supermax prisons. Two common ways to get released from supermax are through good behavior and being released from a prison term. Most supermax inmates have proven they cannot conduct themselves as model prisoners, but they are given another chance through showing good behavior in adverse conditions. If the prisoners are unable to change their behavior, they may complete their sentence in the supermax prison.
