Chapter 4 in Pollack's book described the personalities and identities of prisoners. Chapter 3 in van Wormer's book described the foundational components of an offense perpetrated by a female. I will respond to two common issues between the books. These issues are mental health and environment of youth. One interesting overlap between the two readings was on mental health in prison.
Would you believe me if I told you that you would see so many sociological behaviors in a prison? In the movie Shawshank Redemption, you will see how a person who is institutionalized, deviance and control, and social construction of reality. A person changes and adjusts to their surroundings. In the movie you can see how much damage being institutionalized has made.
It would be impossible to understand women’s imprisonment without looking back to its history. During the sixteenth century English jails were in awful conditions, there was no segregation of inmates. Men, women, children, the mentally ill, physically sick, the serious offenders and the petty offenders were all housed in the same place (Moynahan and Stuart, Pg. 4). Slavery and the Colonial Penal System were a period when America was being colonized; an era when not only the rules of religious and secular beliefs rule, but also of the rules of slavery. Blacks were being sold to slavery.
Michael G. Santos did not write this book to just past time in prison, but also wrote this book to teach people what life is like in prison. Living in prison, Santos describes as invasive and dehumanizing. Santos also describes living in prison like being a machine, where the prisoner is the robotic machine, and the correctional offciers, who Santos says doesn’t do very much correcting, is the person in charge of keeping the robot in routine and constantly on schedule. Not only does Santos describe what life is like in prison, but Santos also describes what goes on in prison. Santos states that some female correctional officer serve as prostitutes to inmates, such as Lion, the leader of prison gang who used female correctional officers as toys for his pleasure.
Angela Davis in her book, Are Prisons Obsolete?, argues for the overall abolishment of prisons. Amongst the significant claims that support Davis’ argument for abolition, the inadequacy of prison reforms stands out as the most compelling. Reform movements truthfully only seek to slightly improve prison conditions, however, reform protocols are eventually placed unevenly between women and men. Additionally, while some feminist women considered the crusade to implement separate prisons for women and men as progressive, this reform movement proved faulty as female convicts increasingly became sexually assaulted. Co-correctional institutions, also referred to as co-ed institutions are those that have both male and female inmates under a singular administration (Schmalleger & Smykla, 2015). The United States has an estimated 52 co-correctional institutions that confined nearly 23,000 men and 7,000 women. The arguments presented in support of the co-eds include that they humanize the worst aspects of incarceration by facilitating heterosexual relationships and create a “normal” atmosphere for prisoners. The prison industrial complex (PIC) is an expression used to describe the connection between the interests of government and industry that use surveillance, policing, and imprisonment the resolution to economic, social and political problems. The P.I.C helps to maintain the authority of people who get their power through racial, economic, social and other privileges. Power is collected and maintained through the PIC in many ways, including creating mass media images that reinforce the stereotypes associated with people of color, less fortunate people, homosexual people, immigrants, youth, elderly and other oppressed communities. These stereotypes imply that those who are associated with these groups of society are criminals, corrupt, delinquent, deviant, etc.
Prison gangs have been and are a growing problem. Prison organizations throughout the United States have tried many different strategies to address the issue of prison gang members. One of the problems is that gang members are more of a threat to the staff and other inmates than regular inmates who are not in a gang. The prisons have problems begin able to house certain serious offenders that need to be kept separate because of the limited spacing. Gangs in the prison have a higher disruption and incident rate then non gang members.
Out of the three correctional ideologies United States used the most is punishment. The punishment ideology is a painful sanction applied to the offender, who is seen as a enemy of society. Punishment can be placed in three categories: retribution, deterrence, and incapacitation. Retribution can be getting even with an offender that has violated the rights of others. Usually they will use deterrence to try to scare away others from committing crimes by punishing the individual.
The stories of the ladies in Maryland only women prison allowed me to see the reality of what women are truly facing and dealing with. These women have been fighting with their self for so long to come and find them self-having to face time behind bar. Trying to figure out how they’re going to find some type of peace and comfortable with in such a small cans cold area with no one to help through the emotions that there feeling. They are the example of what people are saying about women being incarcerated, they are dealing with anger build up from the past and some binding behind the fact and being deceitful about the reason they are really there. Sexual encounters occur among inmates, as well as visitors and institutional staff persons, despite being universally prohibited by institutional policies.
