Aashiq Jivani - Stanford Law School Diversity Statement Like many of the other students at Stanford Law School, I am a first-generation college student. My father grew up in a small village in Gujrat, India, and throughout his entire youth believed that a college education was a luxury that only the rich could afford. My mother, on the other hand, was a city dweller in a well-to-do family, but sadly, had predicaments of her own to endure. By the age of thirteen, her mother had committed suicide, and as the oldest of three children in a patriarchal society, she was forced to drop out of school, and take on the responsibility of a homemaker. In the case of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), my undergraduate institution, there are more than eleven-thousand first-generation students. After learning that research indicated that nearly seven-thousand of these students would not be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in six years, I decided that it was my responsibility to change that number, even if by only a single student. Consequently, in the Fall 2016 semester, I created the Society of First Generation Scholars, the first organization on-campus that provided the first-generation population of UTSA with student and faculty mentors. Since the inception of the organization, more than seventy-five first-generation students have benefitted from the various professional development workshops, individual tutoring sessions, and internship opportunities that have been presented to them. If given the chance to attend Stanford Law School, my experience as the President and Founder of this organization will allow me to be an active participant in the countless programs that have been implemented by Stanford to provide the first-generation students with resources that will aid them in obtaining their degrees. Moreover, I believe that the successes and failures that I have endured with the organization that I founded will better enable me to present meaningful and worthwhile ideas towards these
