We even had to take turns sitting down because there is no space. Being in there for two days feels like eternal. We were tormented by nearly unbearable conditions. There are so many people that there is no air to breathe. I can smell the sweat, tears, and fear from the people.
I still had hope. I still could feel the warm touch of their hands in the darkness of our prison. Now I am all alone. No mother. No brothers.
He said, “I’ll rest a little while.” Just a child in his faith, he fell and slept in the earth. The earth that was not his. When he awoke, it was a new mural in his mind that jumped out. Similar, yet so different.
The intensity masked the reality. Completely stunned I was condemned, a dead man walking. Our eyes locked, this how I thanked him. Him and the others were dragged into a bunker that was locked until her death.
It’s the end of the game, my team is down one, there are eight seconds and counting on the clock and the ball is in my hands. I search the stands to find the one person who has been there for me my entire life. Only he’s not there. It’s easy to get caught up in the game; not the game of basketball, but the dope game. It is a life few choose, but many find themselves in due to the harsh reality of job loss and depression.
"I see ... a pile of skulls and bones. For the first time since my arrival, what I see before me is too painful, and I break down completely. These are my relatives, friends, and neighbors, I keep thinking ... It is a long time before I am calm again. And then I am able, with my bare hands, to rearrange the skulls and bones so that they are not scattered about.
From that moment on I knew that my thirst for a deeper understanding, a breath of the untarnished air below the surface was only to be satisfied when I had explored every facet of a being so complex and full of
The Pad is a burger place in north Topeka. The Pad has been in the same place for the last forty or so years. It is a medium sized building with its sign out front being a rocket ready to launch. Most days The Pad is not that crowded, but always has a good amount of people there. Many families have been going to The Pad for generations.
As I walked into the vicinity of the woods, I looked behind me and into the distance before I entered. I stared at the stormy, low lying, smoky clouds that blanketed the sun and prevented its light from creeping through. The baby blue sky and the ray of light that poked out from the edges of the clouds lit up the day. The openness of the surroundings that laid outside the woods became absorbed into my mind and I began to think. I realized that there is so much more out there in the world and the universe.
This is an unacceptable place of living, and this was how they had their shelter taken away—another vital piece is to be able to have well-being. The prisoners were always in fear. “My forehead was still covered in cold sweat. Still, I told him that I could not believe that human beings were being burned in our times; the world would never tolerate such crimes.” (33).

I bolted upright to see what i could. However, I saw nothing. I could only reason that i'm still dreaming, but as my eyes adjusted, i could see the scene all too clear. I ran to my steps to see clouds of smoke filling my new home. I froze in disbelief, just trying to put together what was happening.
Not a moment later, the sound of rocks scraping against one another and what I thought was digging began and it kept getting closer. Light. That was what I was cascaded in next. As my eyes adjusted I could make out the silhouettes of two female figures,
I looked around. As I turned to the left, I came face to face with the figure of another human. I let out a loud shriek as I stumbled backwards. The figure moved closer to me, and I moved farther back. I was breathing heavily
I have never been to an AA meeting before, and I had a completely different imagination of how a meeting takes place. I thought the meeting was held in a depressing state, dark, and everyone is sad/drunk. However, my experience was exactly the opposite of what I imagined. Even though this was the first AA meeting that I have attended, I feel like I have been attending AA all my life. The members are friendly, supportive, and not shy to express their proudness of being part of AA.
