January of 1901 Texas seemed boring for those Texans that were there at the time, But the 20th century was just getting started when one drop of the gooey, black substance that changed Texas in seconds, Oil is its name! January, 1901, on a little hill called Spindletop oil sprouted into a beautiful rose. It made many opportunities in Texas and the US. Oil was used for lots of things like Asphalt (for paving roads), gasoline to fuel cars, trucks,etc. Oil would now be the economic engine for Texas, oil would make a gigantic impact on Texas as a whole.
To another person, it might be so simple as losing an object that meant a lot to them. These losses can impact the rest of someone 's life. I have experienced this feeling within the last year. My mom has been really sick recently and lots of things have changed even over the past few years, but only a few months ago would it really make the biggest impact in my opinion. In chapter 10 of Pat Conroy’s novel, The Water Is Wide, Pat Conroy takes the children of Yamacraw Island to Washington, D.C. This trip was a great learning experience for the kids and was the farthest that any of them had ever been from home. They toured museums, shopped for souvenirs from street vendors, and ate hot dogs from hot dog carts. This trip taught many lessons to the children, and even to Mr. Conroy. Pat Conroy learned that trips are unpredictable in nature, and cannot be planned to the letter.
As we sat there with our parents behind us and brother in front, I started reading the warnings in the car. Don’t stand up at all times, keep all body parts in the car at all times, I thought. As I talked to one of my friends on the shore of Timberwolf Lake, I had a realization that changed my life forever. Timberwolf Lake is a Young Life camp in Northern Michigan that I attended the summer after my sophomore year. One of my friends was having a hard time in life and needed someone to talk to. While talking to him and making him feel better, it also made me feel better. At the age of two years old my parents received word that I was diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes. The fact that I was diagnosed with Diabetes came as a surprise to my parents, but instead of worrying what the future held, they were just grateful I came out of the hospital alive and healthy. There is one, fairly recent event in my life that has created what I believe to be a lasting impact on me. When I had the opportunity to volunteer for the Yes on V campaign (also referred to as Amendment V) this year, I learned far beyond just basic politics. This action in the scope of my life has left a positive impact on me for a few reasons. First, the actions and events that led up to my acceptance of this opportunity helped shaped my perspectives on not only politics, but the world in general. Secondly, volunteering for the campaign taught me many lessons about myself and the community I am apart of.
I putted the balloon to the new car we just finished making, I use all my breathe to blow the balloon as big as possible. I stared at the car, as I let it go. The car was like the a rocket ‘fly’ to the ‘air’. I almost cry when I saw the car moved, I made it! When the tear almost flow out of my eyes, the car stopped.
The older I get, the more I realize how difficult it has become for me to deal with change. I understanding that change can be a significant thing. I am used to doing things my way. So when the time comes for a change, I do not accept it well. I have a difficult time trying to adjust to change at home and I the workplace.
Weslaco is like my adopted mother. She gave my family and I a home when we were brought into the United States. I wish I could be like everyone else and say I was born here, however I was not. I was born in Mexico, the mother who couldn't give me the opportunities like Weslaco has given me. Through thick and thin, weslaco has always been there with me from the start.
