Occasionally I will think about the time I chose to play volleyball over swimming. The school seasons were at the same time, so once I got to high school, I had to pick one. The sad thing is, I loved both of them equally. I wanted to try and do both, but I knew I couldn’t. My coaches wouldn’t like it if I rotated practices, or couldn’t make it to a game or meet because of the other sport. Even if I did make both of them work, I wouldn’t look very committed to my coaches. My parents also want me to focus on getting good grades, which would be harder if I were playing two sports at the same time. Many aspects have and will continue to change in my lifetime. I remember the first sport I ever played was basketball. My parents put me in a little three year olds league at the YMCA. My mom had played in college, and my dad had also played for a long time in his life. I ended up playing basketball until sixth grade, and on a few different teams. I never really knew whether I liked it or not. Obviously I liked it when I did something well, but other than that I always had mixed feelings. Every time I stopped playing a sport, that was a big change. Every time I started a new sport, that was a big change, too. Stopping swimming was also a large change that impacted my life in many ways. I would be able to focus on volleyball and tennis from then on, and try to become the best I can be. My sports life also changed drastically in volleyball when I got switched from a hitter to a setter. I’m really glad my coach had me switch, I love the amount of control I have in each play and in general on the court. With any other position, there is no way that you are going to touch the ball every play. But with setting, I am involved in virtually every play.
