AVID is a program not intended for everyone. This program exposes you to a variety of skills and mastery for adolescents desiring to attend college. Avid focuses around organization, teamwork, and for you to critically think. These skills are new to many and are provenly beneficial, however these skills do not favor those that have already had these skills and are show casing their full potential. Therefore, Avid is not for me since it interferes with my academic courses, mastery of avid skills and would not be beneficial for me because I have gained much of the skills and would rather interfer than assist.
My biggest expectation going into the internship at DFCS was that I would learn more about the social work/social services field and confirm that social work was truly what I wanted to spend my life doing as a career. I also expected to confirm my thought that DFCS was a place I would enjoy working and could see myself working in the future after graduate school. This internship met my personal expectations, however it happened in a way much differently than I expected. While the internship experience did confirm that I love social work and the social services field, it showed me that DFCS is not the agency that I want to work with as a career. I stand behind DFCS 100%; however, I don’t think I could work with DFCS long term.
As I reflect on the MSW program at Sacramento State University, I am grateful for the experiences I was able to receive during my field work during both years in my MSW program. I am grateful for choosing a program that includes internship as part of the requirement. I truly believe that the field work we have been provided with has given us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and learn what being a social worker really means. The most challenging thing for me during the MSW program was starting my second year placement. It was my first time working in a medical environment and I did not know what to expect.
After this assignment I have learned that Department of Social Services provides a lot of different services to those in need. Just from hearing and reading stories those who work in the field of Social Services aren’t always given a good rep, especially those who work in Child Protective Services. From doing this interview I was pleasantly surprised as to how much work Social Workers do to provide children with a safe and stable environment. There is a lot that goes into what they do every day. I have always known I want to work with children.
When I moved to the Philippines with my family at age six, I had no idea that I’d wind up locking myself in the room downstairs every day for weeks. I remember refusing to go to school where everyone would speak to me in a language I had no fluency in, and instead feebly hiding in the corner of the room in my new house with the door locked, waiting for my carpool to leave before I would come out. I was terrified and overwhelmed; the culture shock seemed insurmountable at the time and looking back now, it definitely was. Everything in the Philippines differed so much from what I was used to in California, and even from Japan where I lived for a year prior to moving. Never would I have thought that it would be there where I would find myself and become more intact with my culture than anywhere
My professional improvement activities connect with my course and dissertation work with the College of Education at California State University, Stanislaus. My doctoral studies there in Educational Leadership with a focus on Community College Leadership has allowed me to research the needs of this Central Valley area and better understand the equity and social justice issues facing students today. My leadership, collaborative, and communication skills all continue to grow due to this program, along with a new-found awareness of the diverse community connections within the Community College environment. Much of my course work research papers had their focus on Yosemite Community College, especially the equity environment here on campus. I have satisfactorily taken 48 units of core and specialization courses, and I am in the process of my final semester of my 12 units of dissertation credits.
I knew I wanted to help people, but the courses that stood in my way were definitely frightening. After consulting the course catalog at Grand View, I found our fairly new Bachelor of Social Work program. I thought like most of the public, naively thinking social workers just took away peoples’ children when there was a bad situation. With only days
Social work is a selfless and demanding field. I am great at listening, able to judge situations fairly and accurately. As a social worker, I know I may have to face some tough situations like child abuse, drug abuse, etc. which I am willing to learn the skills to handle these situations
Throughout my Freshman year, I have had many essays that I have struggled on and worked my very hardest on. Some were research papers, some were book reviews and there was a minimal of creative writing. Consisting of the various papers I have written this year, there are two that stand out to me. One is my research paper on animal experimentation, All Hail the Lab Rats and another is my personal narrative, Taking the Stage. Of the two, I feel that my research paper was weak, and my personal narrative was very strong.
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
I feel that my experiences will both help and hinder me, in a sense I have a deep understanding of what many people whom will need a social worker are going through, but because of this I will also have a harder time ensuring I do not over relate than some of my fellow classmates will. I have not made a decision on what branch of Social Work I actually want to go into, as of right now I am open to anything. Although I have already decided that as soon as I graduate with a Bachelor’s degree I will apply for graduate school to obtain my Master’s
I also help me to understand the environment and the role of the social worker in that particular environment. I am also able to share my knowledge, values and skills to the practice setting. Field supervision also help me to better understand policies, programs, and how institutions impact the clients system as a whole. I am also able to demonstrate my ability to function responsibly and effectively in an agency setting. In my field experience, I am given the opportunity to deliver the appropriate services to the client systems as defined by their area of specialization.
Over the semester I have learned many new aspects of social work that have helped deepen my understanding of what social work is really about. This course has taught me things that will help me become a better person and will also help me with my future working with children. Self reflection is a key skill to have when working in social work. We need to understand how we are, and our social location, influence everything we do with social work. My beliefs and values would be beneficial for being a social worker because I have a caring no judgment, personality that allows me to be a neutral and to listen to people.
Personal Experience In My Class Teachers play a crucial and vital role in the process of learning; though it is very important that they have a detailed knowledge of the ways in which learning should be promoted in schools. I need to know what is important in terms of the learning theories and how these theories can be translated into the classroom environment. During the course of this assignment we studied the topic based on animals. The theme for this unit was sharing the planet, with the central idea being; ‘Animals live in different natural habitats and share the world with us.’
Professional reflection As I began my field experience journey, I learned many roles and responsibilities as elementary teacher. My duration in the field was nine weeks. I began training at E. R. Dickson. I developed a great working relationship with the staff and parents in the community. I always knew teaching is my passion.
