Introduction
According to the online dictionary.com a helper is a person or thing that helps or gives assistance or support. The same dictionary highlighted that profession means a vocation requiring knowledge of some department of learning or science. In society there are groups of persons who give of themselves selflessly by patiently taking the needs of others into consideration. They ensure that person’s well-beings are protected and taken care of the best way possible. These persons are referred to as helping professionals. They fall in the profession of counselors, psychologists, police officers, social workers, teachers, criminal justice and other related profession. This association is headed by Miss Eva Forde. On the international scene there is an international Federation of Social Workers. The United States of America and Canada have their governing body know as National Association of Social Workers and the Canadian association of Social Workers respectively. They derived from the profession of psychology which is the scientific study of overt and covert behavior of living organism. (Kagal and Seagal 2004). Within every profession there are education requirements as to how the people go about practicing their profession. The American Psychological Association which is the governing body for psychologist in America highlighted that for a person to practice as a Psychologist the doctoral degree is the recommended degree for a person to gain a license to practice. In a Jamaica Observer article dated Sunday, April 15, 2007 entitled Psychology equals ‘big bucks’ in practice written by Petre Williams , Dr Pearnel Bell outlined that a person can practice Psychology at the minimum level of a Master’s degree. In the same article, it was outlined that psychologist may have their private practice or they may work in nonprofit organizations.
The profession of counselling is the final helping profession that the researcher will look at. Counsel according to The New International Webster’s pocket dictionary is “to advice, give instructions and guidance.” Persons within this profession may acquire employment at schools, hospitals, policing and the correction services. The minimum education requirement to become a counsellor is a certificate in
