Throughout my Freshman year, I have had many essays that I have struggled on and worked my very hardest on. Some were research papers, some were book reviews and there was a minimal of creative writing. Consisting of the various papers I have written this year, there are two that stand out to me. One is my research paper on animal experimentation, All Hail the Lab Rats and another is my personal narrative, Taking the Stage. Of the two, I feel that my research paper was weak, and my personal narrative was very strong. The contrast between these two pieces made it clear that creative writing is my strength, and I need to work on the literary skills that apply to writing a research paper. The reason I picked this piece is because I had strong use of imagery and detail, which is something that I lacked in some of my other writing pieces. The reason why I was able to do so well on this piece is because it was about my own experience that I know very well, creative writing is my strength and I knew how to tell the reader exactly what was going on because it was mostly about my thoughts and feelings during the experience. At first, my teacher informed me about my overuse of telling instead of showing. With the help of an adult, I was able to get rid of most of the telling and show the reader what was happening through the use of imagery and hyperbole. This is one thing that really made this piece strong. One other thing was that I showed the reader suspense in the most intense, important moments of the story, and I also spoke the thoughts that I had at the time of this experience.
