Personal Reflection On Minority Experiences

As I reflect on this experience, one thing that stands out to me is how a lot of the minority stories shared were all very similar. Also, it made me realize that not every white person has privilege. There were some stories told that I could relate to no matter what race they were. One thing that stands out to me is how comfortable people were sharing an emotional experience with other people they might not know as well. It was a tough situation because I never even shared my experience with my family, so to do it with unfamiliar classmates was a challenge. Stereotyping can be avoided just by not making assumptions and by taking the time to get to know someone on a real level. If I ever experience it again, I will talk about it with that person because we could end up being friends once they let me in. Before you decided to judge someone it’s important to put yourself in their shoes because we all have our struggles, difficulties, and hard times. I will from now on be the bigger person and let it go and keep it pushing it if this experience occurs again. According to Study.com, “intercultural communication, is the verbal and nonverbal interaction between people from different cultural backgrounds” (Muscato, 2014). We all have our own ideas as far as what we think is appropriate or not. I will now have more cultural sensitivity after taking this class because intercultural communication can affect us in the workplace or in our social lives. Self- Awareness is important in this concept because it’s vital to understand the way we communicate. I will procced this concept by not just focusing on my ideas but also those ideas of people from different cultures. Lastly, I will listen more and talk less there is far more to gain by observing and listening to others with different
