The author ended with a cliffhanger but it doesn’t really make me want to read the next one. If he had made the book longer and finished talking about how Sarney and Nightjohn taught in the pit school it would’ve been better. I wouldn’t recommend this book to someone unless they really liked books about history. My opinion on the movie is worse than the book. The only thing I liked about the movie is that Pawley got married and the slaves seem happier than described in the book.

There was so much content and information that I had never even heard of until reading this book. It makes me think just how much other history has been stolen and not told rightly. All this time, I just assumed the rightful story was the one portrayed in the Disney movie. That sounds funny to type out, and quite ignorant. Finding out that she never married John Smith was eye opening for me.
The only thing I didn 't like about the book was how it was written. I think it would be way better if it was written as a story in 1st person about there life and not how it was written. Ellis did an impressive job at balancing the book and not showing bias towards any of the prominent figures. Although the book provides a superb representation of the forefathers in each chapter, some chapters are more effective than others. The book also tends to wander off and get too in-depth in some area so it becomes a bit wearisome. During some areas the narration fails to sustain my attention and spark my interest. Simultaneously, I would not say that it’s dull or boring, as it gives an considerable amount of information and I learned a lot from it.

To some people it is not. Some teachers say that the book is challenging for students. Now, this novel may be difficult for students, but that is how students learn new information. If students weren’t to have read harder pieces of literature all throughout their schooling career, they would stay at the same level of reading for most of their life. The reason why students should read more challenging novels are because they learn new things, and they could also learn how to act in a certain situation based on the type of challenging story they read.
I do think some improvements here and there could really make the book better. The writing is marvelous, much like Neal’s other books, but the plot seemed under-developed and disjointed. My initial reaction was I thought that The Thirteenth Tale was going to be interesting. It has good opening and intriguing premise. The main character, Margaret, is an avid reader. Something that I can relate to. So I was excited.
