I come from a family of 4 children. Being that I am the middle child and first born male, my parents expect a lot from me, and have done their best to make sure I get the best education possible by mentoring and coaching me. As an African American male, I have always been the minority amongst my peers in my School and neighborhood. My parents have always instilled in me that getting a proper education and college degree is the ultimate key to success. Every child has heard their parents describe their hopes and dreams of their child becoming a lawyer, doctor, or engineer and more often than not, this is the only motivation some students have to become a doctor. The medical profession requires focus, dedication and compassion. I feel that I possess these characteristics, because I have been motivated throughout high school to get to my ultimate goal: becoming a doctor. Also, I concern myself with the wellbeing of others, and like to ensure others are content. I’ve always thought of myself as a caring person, and enjoy helping others. I possess strong work ethics, thinking outside the box in emergency situations, using my initiative to figure out what needs to be done and not always wait to be told what to do. I want to aspire to greater heights and learn to love my schooling and job despite difficult situations that may arise. I continue to look forward to being a part of the process of improving health care. As I move towards my career goal to be a physician, I want to be able to build a sense of empathy for patients, understanding what they are going through and identifying with them on a personal and professional level. The Dual degree honors program in Miami will accelerate my path towards becoming a doctor, and expose to me to research and clinical opportunities not usually warranted to undergraduate students.
