I feel as if being a part of the Honors College will connect me to people who share my interest in learning, and who are just as academically driven as myself. The experience of being around those who are constantly striving for academic excellence will push me to continually do better and will create an academically competitive environment which I feel I will flourish in. Being in such an academic environment will help tremendously in achieving my goal of earning a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, my primary professional goal at the moment. Hopefully, my time in the honors college will help to prepare me for my second professional goal: earning a master's degree. Earning a master’s degree, receiving a BSN, and earning a spot in Appalachian's Honors College are all factors that work toward my most important goal, making my mom proud. My mother works hard every day, and she is often exhausted when she comes home from work. I know she is working so hard to support my two brothers and me to earn enough so that we can go to college. I want to show her that her hard work will pay off and that I am going to take the opportunities she has provided for me and go beyond her expectations. Medicine has always been a big interest of mine, and many of my professional and personal goals revolve around it. Additionally, it is also the area where I am interested in doing research. Recently my health sciences teacher showed my class a video about spinal cord injuries. One of the researchers speaking in the video described how the section of the cord that lies below the injury was still perfectly intact, and because of this signals could still flow through that part of the spinal cord despite the injury causing permanent paralysis in the patient. This is what peaked my interest in the topic of spinal cord
