The search for knowledge has led me my entire life. Whether it involved my passion for music, my academic endeavors, or gaining social skills I continue to search for ways to better myself. Being the youngest of five, I was always observing and learning from my siblings. At an early age I discovered that through observations and reflections, I was able to gain knowledge that would benefit me in the future. These youthful moments of intellectual discovery began my search for knowledge. My motivation to learn stems from the power of knowledge. I understood that the more I knew, the more I was capable of doing. In 5th grade I combined this thirst for knowledge with my newly acquired activity of music. I discovered quickly that in music while knowledge is essential, one must be able to apply that knowledge. Knowing facts about music was not enough. We live in a world of instant gratification along with any answer being an internet search away. The wonders of music education come from the basis of a person producing an audible product. There is no way to cheat music performance. The responsibility of the birth, life, and death of sound is put onto the musician. Music education challenges students to devote themselves into learning a skill that cannot be easily reproduced. Musicians are challenged with creating a product that they can be proud of and have pride in their work. A musician’s personal autonomy comes from the necessity to evaluate their product constantly. This constant evaluation leads a musician to develop their ability towards the next level of mastery. This passion towards production can be instilled in other areas of the students’ lives; academic or personal. I strive to connect students to the belief that we must always strive to learn more and better ourselves. We must constantly have a purpose and work towards a
