Being raised in my unique family situation, I was blessed with the opportunity to learn from my older brother’s successes and failures that allowed me to realize the importance of learning from others. At age 4, I began learning to ski as my first sport and the lessons learned have continued to help me throughout life. Being the youngest skier in our group, I was challenged to keep up with the more experienced skiers, which motivated me to learn quickly and progress to more difficult terrain. With the encouragement of my mother, I began racing dirt bikes through the Motocross Racing Association as the youngest in my class for my bike. While becoming injured during a race had prevented my dream of racing motocross professionally, the opportunity to learn from doctors within a hospital setting changed my goals after being treated by the friendliest, happiest, and most caring doctors and nurses I can remember. After becoming interested in medicine, I attended a middle college focused towards pre-medical students, which allowed me to gain valuable experiences that had further exposed me to the medical field. As the first class through The Monroe County Middle College, the opportunity to achieve an Associate’s Degree was presented to students interested in dual enrolling throughout high school. I had successfully achieved nearly 20 credits beyond my Associates degree, while excelling in tutoring over 12 college-level subjects in the Learning Assistance Lab. This had led me to pursue a Biochemical Engineering Degree at CU, which the courses and mindsets of the other engineers had fascinated me. However, well designing a project to help a developmentally disabled individual, I began to realize my true passion is solving the medical aliments that led to the conditions that the client and brother had suffered from. This led me to change degree programs to begin studying Molecular and Cellular Developmental Biology (MCDB), which I hoped to focus on genetic research.
