When ball is life everyone wins: Homerun! Touchdown! 3 point shot! Goal! Yes I have celebrated and scored in all these different ways as the athlete that I am. They were certainly great achievements for me as well as for anyone else. But at times I am just remembered or known for my great individual sport performances that make me standout and be seen as the brightest star in the sky rather than for my other nonathletic sport duties I tend to fulfill as an athlete and that mean more to me. Even though it is partially true that an athlete is supposed to entertain, compete, and just play a sport, an athlete can offer so much more such as guidance and support towards others’ lives. In regards to my personal experiences and the role I play as an athlete I consider myself an effective communicator because I have learned how to interact and speak efficiently in a manner that I have successfully build a reputation that has allowed me to come in touch personally with my teammates and colleagues and find solutions to task. For instance I remember the day my teammates and I had soccer practice one afternoon and the season was about to start and we just could not figure out how to play as a unit especially with the new recruits. We were having trouble building plays because we did not know each other’s unique playing style so there was no rhythm or understanding of what to do. Since I was considered a veteran on the team based on my experience I then remembered what my coach and instructors had taught me on how to create a bond with my teammates through speech. I started off by showcasing myself as a humble person and sending out the message that I believe on teamwork and not individuality. I told them that we do not need stars in these team on the contrary we need players who want to work hard every day to become the best. I then finally told them that I am not a player whose going to control them or dictate them in the field because that won’t do the team any good instead I want them to share their own opinions and solutions to help us achieve our goals and build our overall chemistry. Through the role of being an active communicator and constantly interacting with my teammates in a calm way I was able to build the trust and respect in our team and especially towards one another. I then found out that through being an athlete I was able to learn communications skills not only useful for communicating with my teammates in sports but to also communicate in the real world with other people.
