Personal Statement: A Career As A Correctional Officer

Introduction

For most of my life I have been curious about what it was like inside of a jail or prison. Of course I never wanted to be an inmate, but I was interested in seeing it through the eyes of a Correctional Officer. About four years ago, I met Jess Greenlee at an anime convention and immediately we became friends, she was still in college at the time to become a correctional officer, and boy did I have questions for her. Throughout these four years, Officer Greenlee knew of my curiosity, so when the time came to do my job shadow, she was the first person to step up to the plate. I did not know just how much I would like the repetitive job that Jess does every single day. I had a great time interacting with the Inmates, other Officers and working Jpod. Part of me lingers in that jail, slightly drawing me towards this career choice.

In this case, there are no renowned CO’s. The happenings inside the institutions are praised by the sheriff's, deputies and superintendents, but are not public knowledge. There are several Corrections Officers that died while on duty, this would be a perfect time to honor one. Corrections Officer Timothy Davison died on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 after being attacked by an inmate. “Davidson was escorting a 37 year old prison inmate from a dayroom to his cell in the Barry B. Telford Unit of the New Boston Prison facility when the inmate attacked Officer Davison.” (Sharkey). The 37 year old inmate got ahold of an iron bar that is used to open slots in cell doors for delivering food, and he beat the officer. Due to sustaining serious head injuries, Officer Davison passed away at Christus St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana shortly after the incident. Officer Davison had served the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the Corrections Division for eight months and is father of two
