Personal Statement: A Career In Education

I have had two dreams growing up, one is to become an elementary teacher and the other is to become a mother. I grew up in rural northeast Missouri and I have always hoped to be able to stay here and teach students in this area. I have always wanted to be a teacher and I remember playing school when I was a little girl. I had my own whiteboard and always gave the role of student to my friends as I made math worksheets and spelling tests for them to complete. As I grew older and went through school, I knew I wanted to stay in that environment for my future career. In high school, I looked at a few other careers but I always ended up coming back to teaching.

My second dream is to become a mother. When I wasn’t playing school with my friends, I was playing house. In order to become the mother I want to be, I need to have a good education and a career. As a child and even into my teenage years, I have watched my parents struggle financially and I don’t want to struggle like them. I am a first-generation college student and I am very proud of that. By going to college and earning a degree, I hope to set a good example for my future children and even my younger sister, who is still in middle school. …show more content…

While I could look at this as a roadblock to not go to college, I look at it as an even better reason to go. It is just one more hurdle I will have to jump over in order to provide for my future family. It means that I am the one that will be paying to attend college and therefore shows that I want to be there that much more. I know I will graduate college with student loan debt, but that is simply what it is going to take for me to get through
