“Seva” in my language means paying back to society voluntarily . I’ve taken this saying to heart. This has been an integral part of my family. Since childhood on the way to the Sikh temple on weekly devotional congregation, my dad would gently talk to my siblings and me about the virtues of helping others. My dad would always emphasize examples from the teachings of the sikh religion extolling us to be always mindful of the needs of others. Those benevolence moments of our weekly visits to the Sikh temple are the cornerstones of my decision of submitting an application for the student volunteer position at Doctors Hospital of Manteca. Upon being approved as a student volunteer and a part of the hospital, it made me realize that I've indeed made one of the most exciting decisions in my life. I was ready to face the world, excited, and full of life when I received the auxiliary identification card that displayed my smiling face. It was then, when I truly felt that I was now a part of the hospital and can proudly call myself a volunteer. I was convinced that this was the environment that would allow me to serve others. This experience has inspired me to go into the medical field. Therefore, the hospital was the perfect path to take in order to learn more about the medical field. I’ve received many opportunities to sit between nurses, doctors, patients, and other health professionals (careers that were unknown to me). Those moments were very precious because I knew for sure that I wouldn’t have gotten any other chance to experience the challenges that health professionals face every day.
