Community Service Aspirations

My passion for community service and advocating for others started from adolescence. My mother instilled in me the qualities of compassion and dedication to one's community. Her continued service in developing programs and support groups for teen mothers was an example of advocating for the youth in our community. I want to pursue a master's in Child Advocacy and Policy because it presents an opportunity to gain knowledge, research, and practice advocating for adolescence. As a child advocate, I plan on working in education departments to collaborate with schools to better supports students dealing with the negative influences of their environment. I was a program coordinator for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12: Migrant and 21st Century Education Program (non-profit). This program provides services to migrant families and youth within Adams County, PA. I organized after-school tutoring programs as well as community/family-oriented activities. I helped mentor students about social atmospheres, politics, and through the college process. As a Child Advocate and Policymaker, it is important to have firsthand experiences with people of diverse backgrounds. A diverse experience enhances the understanding of historical and social implications of problems and the ways to alleviate or solve them. Working with students from the migrant community gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal about the lives of migrant farm workers in the United States. The parents instill strong work ethic and cultural pride within their children, but their careers, political systems/laws negatively impact the academic and social lives of their children. Having a program geared towards celebrating their identity and provide youth with support in school through college, lifts their spirits and foster excellence. I have the academic skills of critical thinking and analysis to push myself to academic achievement. Academically, I struggled my first two years of college. I disappointed in my grades at the time, not in my effort or determination. When I am curious and passionate about a subject, I push myself to reach my full potential in understanding and application. I maintained a 3.2-3.4 average for my final 3 semesters in my undergraduate career as well. Studying Child Advocacy and Policy provides me with a tremendous opportunity to utilize the skills I attain in my undergraduate career and apply them to a topic I am very drawn to. I am excited about the knowledge and skills gained from the professors and my fellow peers within the program. I will acquire the essential tools to begin making a significant impact
