Personal Statement for KU School of Nursing. From as young as the age of five or six years old, I can remember telling the kids I played with that I wanted to be just like my mom who was a CNA and help people. Of course, I had no real knowledge of what a CNA did, but I did know that my mom made an impact on people’s lives due to the stories she would tell or our visits to her residents at the nursing home. As I grew older, I recognized the selflessness and humility of a healthcare worker that ultimately helped shape my love and desire for nursing. Once I knew that I had the deep calling and determination to become a nurse, I decided that to fully understand the career that I wanted to pursue, I would have to gain real bedside nursing experience. And I hope to continue this as I pursue a career in nursing. My entire life I’ve grown up in Kansas and have participated in the immersive culture that Kansas provides. This includes all of the diverse and rich history that The University of Kansas has contributed to the Kansans. Jayhawk pride itself is something that was immense in my household and influenced my love for my community. In addition, I currently work at The University of Kansas Hospital and I think that the time I have spent near the school of nursing and interacting with the students helped me appreciate KU’s wonderful nursing program. One thing that stood out to me when exploring the KU School of Nursing’s missions and values was the emphasis on creating and applying new knowledge in healthcare. The past two years of actively working in the healthcare field have allowed me to explore so many different areas of nursing and observe the qualities of evidence-based practices and patient-centered care.
