In 2008, Abigail Fisher, a white female, applied for admission at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1997, Texas passed legislation which guaranteed all students who graduate in the top 10% of Texas’ graduating class, admission to all Texas state-funded universities, regardless of other factors. Fisher did not qualify for Texas’ “Top 10%” with a GPA of 3.59 and an SAT score of 1180, but applied for general admission in the top 12% of her class. At the University of Texas, about 75% of admissions are comprised of students who qualified as Texas’ “Top 10%”, and 25% of admissions are based on several factors including, but are not limited to, grade-point average, extracurricular activities, and race. When Fisher was denied admission, she enrolled

My childhood was not most would consider to be easy. Both my mother and father had addiction issues that forced my younger brother and I to care for ourselves. By the time I reached the fifth grade, I had attended five different elementary schools. On the days that I did actually go to school, I was not on time. A few years later, I moved in with my grandparents, and my entire life improved.
I am the best candidate for this scholarship because I have experienced a hard and unwanted event, but I have grown from it and become a better and stronger person because of my parents, which will help me power through college and become a civil lawyer. My mom and dad although divorced, have supported me through every event in my life, making me the person I am today. Living with my mom, I have learned how hard it really is to do things that my dad would have done in a heartbeat. As I grew up knowing that my dad was not coming back through the back door as I hoped, I learned how hard life really is and how life is not fair.
Single Parent to Graduate Student Enrolling in Northcentral University, NCU to obtain my graduate degree in education is one of accomplishment and a new beginning to a new career. I have always had a passion for indifference, injustice, and making a difference. I have an associate’s degree in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in Human and Family Services. I went from having a degree in computer science to a human service degree because of a family tragedy that made me evaluate my purpose in life as an individual. I am currently a case manager with a mental health/mental retardation organization and a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer.
National Honor Society is known for their members with great grades and outstanding character. I personally believe that I would fit into this club wonderfully. Personal Statement- Stephanie Olivera Growing up I was always the odd one in our family. When my parents started having children, they did not plan us very well. I am 5 years younger than my older brother, 4 years younger than my sister and 8 years older than my younger brother. I was the child that did not have anyone to "play" with, and I grew accustomed to being alone.
By taking on leadership roles such as being president of environmental club and public relations of class council, I am a mentor to others all while sharing the same interests and providing opportunities for them to build their own character. Prior to this school year, I was fortunate enough to attend a weeklong event called Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, where I lived there for a week surrounded by young leaders from all over south jersey. In this experience, I learned that being a leader means being understanding of others and their situations. With this experience I was able to bring back what I learned to my own communities like environmental club. Not only do I have to be organize and communicative, but I also have to be a role model to members of a club by showing my own good character.
This will help me complete my prerequisites and also help me learn all about what I need to know to have my dream career. I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I am hard-working and dedicated. I will graduate high school a semester early with all my credits and a 3.6 GPA. I have worked since the summer I turned 15, and now during my senior year, I hold two part time jobs adding up to about 30-40 hours a week while still going to highschool full time. I have also held many leadership positions throughout my high school years.
I should be awarded this scholarship because I will use it for the benefit of young children with special needs. The name of this scholarship is "Courage to Grow", and I believe receiving this will help give me the education needed to raise my courage in order to spread wisdom and encouragement that will one day enrich a young person and will help them grow into intellectual and inspiring men and women. This scholarship will help me to go into the world and change the lives of young people who may feel discouraged or negatively affected by the verbal and mental abuse all because a doctor said there was something "wrong" . I hope that because of my teaching, young students with special needs will begin seeing themselves as individuals instead
Eagerness to learn, attention to details, and willingness to put in required effort and time, all qualities I wish to continue to practice as a student in AP English 12. As a student of organization and willingness to participate in classroom discussions and interactions, I believe those attributes of me as a student set me up for success in this class. My enthusiasm in learning has been a leading factor in my decision to apply for this rigorous course my senior year. While there are other options available this is the course best suited for me due to my attention to details and readiness to dedicate time and effort into this class. As an AP English student I am mainly interested in continuing to practice and develop reading and writing skills

Getting chosen to get this scholarship will me get more motivated to attend a 4 year college, and it will also help my parents. Due to living in a low income family, college can be very difficult. I come from a family where, we do struggle at times. Getting this scholarship will be an honor and will save my family and I money. My family is very supportive towards my career goals, which is to become a Register Nurse so I can help people around the world, and one day make an organization to help people whom also struggle.
