Personal Statement: Pursuing A Career In Physical Education

Growing up I wasn’t always the teacher’s favorite student. I would often get into trouble or cause trouble in the classroom. I was the kid who enjoyed pushing teacher’s buttons. School was a field day for me I would come in and make the teacher’s day a living hell. I didn’t respect the teachers who couldn’t handle me or took the easy way out by kicking me out the class. The teachers who really cared and would spend extra time with me are the ones I respected. At home I had a loving single mother who worked hard to provide for her 5 children. My mother would work so much that at times I wouldn’t see her for a day or two. She worked in the hospital and would do over time every chance she could get. I barley spent time with my mom. I chose this field because I enjoyed gym growing up, that was the only class I looked forward to. People often water down gym and act as if it’s not as important as reading, writing, and arithmetic. But in fact it is, the United States has one of the highest obesity rates at 33.9%. Also two of the top causes of death in America is heart disease, and diabetes. Both of those diseases can be prevented from healthy eating habits and physical activity. So being able to teach healthy eating habits along with fun physical activity is essential for children to learn at a young age. I would like to teach ether middle school or high school physical education. Most elementary students are already filled with energy and love to run around all day. As whereas Junior high and high school is about the time when children become lazy and turn to video games. Physical Education isn’t the easiest class to teach, in fact I believe it’s the hardest. Children come in all shapes and sizes. Some are more athletic than others, some are more secure than others. Going about teaching the wrong way or just handling a situation the wrong way could ruin a child life forever. My teacher Tom Diana always made sure everyone was equal and comfortable in his classroom. He demonstrated this by always choosing children who are insecure or who aren’t the most athletic to be the captain of the designated sport we were playing. He taught his class that teamwork is essential to win. This way of treating one another rubbed off on me and just inspired me to become a physical education
