Disney Pixar movie Inside Out presents five personified emotions - Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear inside character Riley Anderson. The main characters that develop the plot in the movie however are Joy and Sadness. Although a negative emotion, we as humans automatically choose to suppress. Sadness can bolster one’s ability to acknowledge the pain one has inside of them. The character Joy makes it her objective to always have Riley happy and is overbearing towards the other emotions when doing so, especially Sadness. In the movie Inside Out it is crucial to mindfully embrace rather than suppress as experiencing sadness is essential to our well being.

In the movie, the character Joy exerts herself very persistently upon maintaining Riley happy as well as making sure to produce a larger amount of happy memories than all other emotions. Inflicting happiness upon oneself will not be very beneficial instead it will produce a sense of insecurity among stress. Riley having recently moved to San Francisco from Minnesota, as well as going to a new school and making new friends in a new city, makes it already stressful for Riley to accommodate to these new changes. Attempting to pursue happiness in times of distress results in having Riley feeling detached and irritated with her parents which leads her into thinking of running away from home. In the article it’s mentioned that “the more people value—and pursue—happiness, the less likely they may be to obtain it, especially when happiness appears to be within reach.” (Weiss 225) This falls into the category of being unable to feel happiness during a happy event and instead feeling sad and disappointed for not being able to enjoy oneself in the course of a pleasant event or
