Going into college you probably are thinking you will be invincible. No more parents telling you what to do and when to do it. No more having your decisions made for you, just complete freedom. You’re going to meet all new people who are going to be part of your new “home”, everything you have dreamed of since you started packing up for school. Even though all these things sound like they will be awesome, it will only be a matter of time before you start to miss everything you have ever known at home. The longer you go without talking to them and filling them in on your new experiences, the more you will start to miss them. You should not be embarrassed or afraid to admit to your family that you feel homesick. Chances are they miss you much more than you miss them and they will always be there to reassure you. Also, do not be afraid to ask your family to come visit you, even if it is just to go out to dinner. Although you might want to go home to visit, it is better for them to come to you when you are feeling homesick because if you go home, you may not want to come back. You do not want to fall behind because you are having a hard time making the adjustment. If you just shut down because you are missing what the work was like before college, you will have a hard time regaining your focus and it could have a critical effect on your school work. One of the major changes from high school to college is increase in the amount of independent work you are assigned. Personally I was used to having my parents help me if I got suck on homework so I was worried what it would be like if I needed help at college. If you have this fear, don’t worry because there is ample amount of opportunities to get the extra help you need. If you are struggling, do not be embarrassed. Just make sure you seek the help you need to get back on track.
