For many years there has been a war on drugs. Nothing that has been done has stopped any of it. Some things like the governments D.A.R.E program has done nothing, but cost tax payers money. In the 1940’s, scientists proved that marijuana was not connected to insanity or violence. In 1973, a bipartisan government commission recommended Nixon decriminalize it (Drug Abuse). John Ehrlichman even said, “We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and the blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. The drug heroin was first marketed and sold by the the drug company Bayer, the aspirin company (Bayer AG.). Purdue a drug company, who makes Oxycontin marketed it like crazy. Using stuffed toys, golf balls, and even a CD (Quinones, Sam). Some studies even show that 80% of new heroin users started with prescription opioids (CDC). A solution to this problem is to open supervised injection facilities. An example of one already in operation in Canada is Insite. Insite was the first supervised injection site in North America. You can safely inject your drugs without the fear of death from an overdose. They also offer detox to those who want to, and after they opened, 30% more people entered drug treatment programs. But more importantly, these sites are life savers (Wood, Evan). So, over time the death rates from “illegal” drug related injection will decrease.
Implementing such a solution would not come without its fees. First, you would have to pay for the construction of the facility itself. Then, you would have to employ a staff that is capable of dealing with
