Pretend that you’re surfing in the ocean, when you see a part of the water turn darker and darker. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, a shark bites your surfboard and doesn’t let go. It snaps again, but at you this time. The color of blood starts to be all that you can see. This is something that you’d normally see in movies about sharks like Jaws. What if I told you that sharks aren’t actually entirely like how movies portray them as? What if I told you that people don’t have to be scared of sharks, but that it should be the other way around? What if I told you that sharks don’t attack people on purpose, or that it’s very unlikely to get attacked by a shark or that sharks are endangered? The number of sharks in the ocean is decreasing because of a couple of different reasons. In the article, “Sharks: Monsters or Misunderstood,” it mentions how sharks are being endangered. Some of the reasons why sharks are endangered are they mature slowly, produce relatively few offspring, and overfishing. Hundreds of sharks are being killed each year for their fins. In some situations, people cut off the fins of sharks, and just toss them back into the oceans. That is just cruel! Their fins are used to help them swim through the water. Without them, they won’t be able to swim properly. It’s like having a body part being cut off, and then being put back into an ocean full of salt. In some places, shark fin soup is even considered a delicacy! On some beaches, people set traps for sharks called shark nets. The kinds of sharks that actually do get stuck in there are sharks that haven’t attacked anyone. This is just unfair to the sharks. Also, during a 3-month period in 2014, drum lines(a type of trap used to attract and capture sharks) caught about 170 sharks. Most of them were tiger sharks. But, according to ABC, tiger sharks haven’t killed anyone in that area for the past 20 years. This shows how sharks are endangered because of how many sharks might get trapped in the drum lines. Drum lines are another way that kills sharks, so that’s another way that shows how sharks are going extinct. This is another reason why sharks should be scared of people instead of the other way
