A violent criminal or a keeps-to-themselves, pot smoker, who would you rather be neighbors with? To most, the answer is quite clear. However, with the number arrests of misdemeanor marijuana possession outweighing the number of solved violent crimes, you’re more likely to live next to a potential threat. In order to prevent wasting police resources and hundreds of millions of dollars, we must vote in favor for Proposition 19.
Proposition 19 states that it will raise penalties for providing marijuana to minors, put strict penalties for driving under the influence, and ban smoking in public. This is significant because all of these factors help increase the control the use of marijuana while giving consumers the power to buy and smoke it. What proposition 19 does not state, however, is that users can legally smoke pot up until the moment they physically get in their vehicles and drive. In driving simulations, it has been found that marijuana increases time needed to take drivers to react. On the other hand, marijuana makes cannabis users more cautious and drive slower. And while schools in California are experiencing budget cuts, legalizing marijuana would in truth accumulate billions of tax dollars for the federal economy. This is more money that could be used to help fund after school programs, pay for new technology, and buy quality databases. Therefore, by passing Proposition 19 we would gain assets. By not passing it, however, we would lose resources. California’s police forces are more focussed on marijuana distribution than violent crime. With Proposition 19, we’d have more money for schools and give those enforcing the laws a better focal
